Lakers Rumors: Dwane Casey, Jacque Vaughn Eyed for JJ Redick's Coaching Staff

Now that JJ Redick has been formally introduced as Los Angeles Lakers head coach, his first act with the club will be to fill out the staff that will join him on the bench.

Per NBA insider Marc Stein, the Lakers have pursued former NBA head coaches Dwane Casey and Jacque Vaughn to join Redick's staff for the 2024-25 season.

The Lakers have been aiming high to surround Redick with experienced coaches even before he was formally hired.

Stein reported last month that Sam Cassell, James Borrego and Jared Dudley were all candidates the Lakers were looking at as potential assistants. Cassell and Borrego were among the coaches Los Angeles interviewed during its head-coaching search.

Cassell, who has spent the past two seasons as an assistant with the Boston Celtics, has yet to make a decision about where he will spend the 2024-25 campaign. Stein noted last week the Celtics are "very keen" to keep him by elevating him to a more prominent role on Joe Mazzulla's staff.

Per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Borrego is considered a "prominent" candidate for the Detroit Pistons' job after Monty Williams was fired on June 19.

Casey spent last season in a front-office role with the Pistons after stepping down as their head coach in April 2023. The 67-year-old has a 494-570 record in 14 seasons as a head coach with three different teams.

Vaughn spent the past seven seasons as a coach for the Brooklyn Nets. He was originally hired as an assistant on Kenny Atkinson's staff prior to the 2016-17 season. He took over as interim head coach for the final 10 games of the 2019-20 season after Atkinson was fired.

After hiring Steve Nash as head coach in September 2020, the Nets were able to retain Vaughn as an assistant. He took over as interim coach again following Nash's firing early in the 2022-23 season before the Nets named him their full-time coach on Nov. 9, 2022.

Vaughn went 64-65 with the Nets over the past two seasons before being fired on February 19.

The Lakers hired Redick as their head coach despite him not having any previous coaching experience at any level. He is replacing Darvin Ham, who went 90-74 with one appearance in the Western Conference Finals in two seasons.
