Updated 2024 AEW Forbidden Door Card and Predictions for Match Order

Mike Chiari

For the third time, AEW and New Japan Pro-Wrestling are teaming up to produce the Forbidden Door pay-per-view this weekend.

The groundbreaking first edition of Forbidden Door occurred in 2022, and ever since then AEW and NJPW have worked together to deliver wrestling fans with dream matches on an annual basis.

There will be plenty of crossover matches with major implications on this year's Forbidden Door, plus two of the best wrestlers AEW has to offer will do battle for the AEW world title in the likely main event.

Here is a full rundown of the Forbidden Door card, including the projected match order and a deep dive into the top bouts on the show.

Where: UBS Arena in Elmont, New York

When: Sunday, June 30 at 8 p.m. ET (Pre-Show starts at 7 p.m. ET)

Watch: B/R Live

Top Forbidden Door Matches to Watch

Swerve Strickland vs. Will Ospreay

Just over two months after beating Samoa Joe for the AEW World Championship, Swerve Strickland will face his toughest test to date at Forbidden Door when he takes on Will Ospreay.

Ospreay is the reigning international champion, and he has yet to lose a singles match since officially signing with AEW, which means something has to give on Sunday.

While it would be surprising to see Swerve drop the world title after only two months, it can be argued that it would be equally surprising for Ospreay to take his first loss.

In addition to the unpredictability of the match result, there is excitement surrounding the match itself since Strickland and Ospreay are widely considered to be two of the best in-ring workers in the world.

Few others in pro wrestling are capable of doing what Strickland and Ospreay do, especially from a high-flying perspective.

Strickland and Ospreay have worked together in the past, but never in a major North American wrestling company, so their match at Forbidden Door will feel fresh and new to most, but they will also have a foundation already in place that they can build upon.

Mercedes Moné vs. Stephanie Vaquer

At Forbidden Door, Mercedes Moné will compete in only her third match since signing with AEW.

Mercedes became a champion in her first match, beating Willow Nightingale for the TBS title at Double or Nothing, and following a win over Skye Blue on the May 29 episode of Dynamite, she learned who her first major challenger would be.

NJPW Strong women's champion Stephanie Vaquer made a surprise appearance to challenge Moné to a match at Forbidden Door, and the stakes were later raised, as it was announced Vaquer's title would be on the line as well.

Given that Mercedes fell short in her quest to win the NJPW Strong Women's Championship last year due to an injury suffered during a match against Nightingale, making it a winner-take-all match upped the importance even more.

Vaquer isn't yet a well-known commodity in the United States, but she is a star in Mexico and Japan, and she could be the next big thing in women's wrestling.

Mercedes is arguably the biggest women's star in wrestling right now, making her match against Vaquer battle between the present and future of women's wrestling.

Jon Moxley vs. Tetsuya Naito

The IWGP World Heavyweight Championship match at Forbidden Door will feature arguably the most important performer in AEW history facing NJPW's biggest current star.

Jon Moxley is a former WWE and AEW world champion, and back in April, he added the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship to his list of accolades.

Mox beat Tetsuya Naito to win the title, but at Forbidden Door, Naito will look to become a five-time world champion in New Japan.

Despite being in different companies, Moxley and Naito have built a rivalry since Mox left WWE, and Sunday's bout figures to be their biggest match against each other yet.

It can be argued that AEW stars have gotten the better of NJPW stars more often than not at Forbidden Door, but Naito winning feels like a real possibility since it would put the IWGP world title back on a New Japan wrestler.

However, if Mox prevails, it will mean an even longer run for Moxley in NJPW, which could mean even more dream matches.
