ESPN 2024 NBA Mock Draft: Bronny James, Zach Edey to Lakers; Risacher to Hawks

The Los Angeles Lakers might be targeting the two biggest names in college basketball during the 2024 NBA draft.

ESPN's final mock draft has the Lakers selecting Purdue center Zach Edey in the first round and USC guard Bronny James in the second.

French forward Zaccharie Risacher remains the overwhelming favorite to be chosen by the Atlanta Hawks with the top overall pick.

The Lakers would likely be thrilled to have Edey fall to them at No. 17. The two-time reigning National Player of the Year in college, he has unreachable height (7'4") that makes him an elite rim protector on the defensive end and good tough near the rim offensively.

His lack of athleticism will be an issue at the next level, but he should be able to eat up 10-15 minutes a night when Anthony Davis sits or plays the 4.

James, the son of LeBron James, only worked out for the Lakers and Phoenix Suns ahead of the draft.

Agent Rich Paul told ESPN's Jonathan Givony that the 19-year-old limited his workouts by design:

"Bronny is the same as my previous clients. I got the word out early to teams that if you plan on bringing Bronny in, here's what you need to know: If you won't give him a real deal, there's nothing to talk about. It's hard to get real development on a two-way deal.

"I don't care about him going to the Lakers, or Phoenix, or about what number he gets picked. It's about fit."

Paul seemed confident James would wind up being selected by either the Lakers, Suns or another team willing to offer him a guaranteed roster spot. Once considered a potential lottery pick, he struggled during his lone season at USC after having a congenital heart defect repaired last July.

The Lakers landing Edey and James would likely be considered a home run in the front office after last year's whiff on Jalen Hood-Schifino. Jaime Jaquez Jr., Brandin Podziemski and Cam Whitmore were the three immediate picks after Hood-Schifino, and all had stellar rookie seasons.

The Lakers could also look to be aggressive and trade their first-round pick if they can find a package for a veteran who fits next to LeBron and Davis.
