Gunther, Will Ospreay and WWE, AEW Stars Most Likely to Win World Titles in 2024

Donald Wood

Winning a world championship is one of the highest possible achievements in professional wrestling, and there are several marquee Superstars who will etch their names in the history books this year with their first such victory.

In WWE, the stage has been set for Gunther to ascend to the top of the card when he likely wins the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam.

In All Elite Wrestling, Will Ospreay and Mercedes Mone are on their way to holding the top title in their respective divisions.

Here are the WWE and AEW wrestlers most likely to win world titles in 2024.

Gunther

Since Vince McMahon's unceremonious departure from WWE, no Superstar has been given more room to grow than Gunther.

Ultimately, his main roster success will lead to a win at SummerSlam where he will likely challenge Damian Priest for the world heavyweight title.

The stage has been set for The Ring General's triumphant moment.

After being booked to dominate NXT UK, Gunther has brought the same dominance to the main roster, putting on some of the best matches on Raw and SmackDown for years.

With the Austrian being one of the best in-ring workers in the company and the World Heavyweight Championship being the workhorse belt, expect him to become a steadying force on every premium live event for the rest of 2024 and into 2025.

Priest's victory was incredible, but he must step aside for Gunther.

Will Ospreay

Since AEW has only one world title—WWE boasts two—its world championship reigns tend to be longer.

With that said, Swerve Strickland's run with the gold will come to an end soon when Will Ospreay takes the belt.

With The Elite working to recruit Swerve and tension being teased between Ospreay and his former friend, the intrigue in the world title scene is still building and ensures a long-term feud between the two talented performers.

At Sunday's Forbidden Door, Swerve and Ospreay will put on an absolute banger, stealing the show and showcasing their elite skills.

Unfortunately, The Young Bucks, Kazuchika Okada and Jack Perry will ruin the contest and ensure a rematch down the line.

After an unsatisfying finish, Ospreay should demand another shot at the title at All In at Wembley Stadium in London. There, the Englishman can finally achieve his goal and walk out as AEW's top champion in his home city.

Swerve has been a great champion, but Ospreay winning in the United Kingdom makes too much sense not to happen in August.

Mercedes Moné

Since arriving in AEW, Mercedes Moné has been a major attraction, winning the TBS Championship and dominating the women's division with a secondary storyline rivaling what's happening in the women's world title scene.

Eventually, Toni Storm will have to answer to The CEO.

At Forbidden Door, Moné will continue her belt-collecting ways when she challenges and likely defeats Stephanie Vaquer for the NJPW Strong Women's Championship. At that point, she must turn her attention to the AEW women's world title.

As great as Storm has been, her battle against Mina Shirakawa should be one of her final successful title defenses. Once Moné sets her sights on the belt, the war in the ring and on the mic should be one of the best parts of AEW programming.

Eventually, Mariah May should turn on Storm, costing the champion her beloved belt, handing Mone another title for her collection and setting up a marquee secondary storyline for the women's division for the remainder of 2024.
