Top Storylines That Will Determine Winner Of Each NFL Division for 2024 Season

Maurice Moton

Since the NFL began its 17-game regular season in 2021, four new teams have won divisions every year.

Expect more turnover at the top of the standings in 2024.

Following an offseason of front office, coaching and roster changes, we've highlighted the biggest storyline that can determine the winner of each division in 2024.

Each storyline will focus on a team that can challenge last year's division winner.

AFC East: Are Aaron Rodgers, Jets Ready for the Prime-Time Spotlight?

Jets QB Aaron Rodgers Sarah Stier/Getty Images

The New York Jets have six prime-time games before their Week 12 bye, along with a Week 5 standalone contest against the Minnesota Vikings in London.

Under that intense spotlight, the Jets will show the rest of the NFL whether they're ready to live up to high expectations with a healthy Aaron Rodgers under center.

If the Jets knock off teams like the San Francisco 49ers, Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans before Thanksgiving, they should be in the mix for an AFC East title.

Even though the Bills traded star wide receiver Stefon Diggs to the Texans, their offense could still post respectable numbers with two-time Pro Bowl quarterback Josh Allen. Rookie second-rounder Keon Coleman will help fill Buffalo's void at wideout.

Nonetheless, the Jets can get the upper hand over Buffalo with a victory in Week 6.

If that happens, New York and the Miami Dolphins may be battling for the AFC East crown with two matchups between Weeks 14 and 18.

AFC North: Can Joe Burrow Stay Healthy?

Though the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers both made the playoffs last season, the AFC North seems like a two-team race between the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals in 2024. That's the benefit of having elite quarterbacks.

Since 2021, the Bengals or Ravens have claimed the AFC North title every year. After Cincinnati won the division in both 2021 and 2022, Baltimore won it last season.

Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has played more than 10 games in only two of his four NFL seasons to date. In both campaigns, the Bengals won the division and played in the AFC Championship Game.

Coming off the second season-ending injury of his pro career, Burrow still needs time to get back to 100 percent.

"This was a difficult injury," Burrow told reporters in May. It's been a tough several months, but physically it's not the worst injury that I've had. I've been through much tougher things physically and so that's been a positive. I've been able to really lift and continue my offseason program kind of the way that it always has been."

But in June, Burrow said he'll be "ready to go by the season."

Burrow won 2021 Comeback Player of the Year after he bounced back from a torn ACL. This year, Burrow could be in the running for Comeback Player of the Year again if he leads his playoff-ready roster from last to first in the AFC North for the Bengals' third division title in four years.

AFC South: Can Shane Steichen Help Anthony Richardson Make a Massive 2nd-Year Leap?

Colts QB Anthony Richardson Justin Casterline/Getty Images

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson showed dynamic flashes as a rookie last year, but he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in Week 5.

Richardson finished his rookie campaign with 577 passing yards, three touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed for 136 yards and four scores.

With Richardson as their starter, the Indianapolis Colts beat the Houston Texans on the road and the Tennessee Titans, who still had veteran quarterback Ryan Tannehill under center.

Despite losing Richardson so early in the year, the Colts fielded the league's 10th-ranked scoring offense with backup quarterback Gardner Minshew under center. All-Pro running back Jonathan Taylor missed seven games because of ankle and thumb injuries, but head coach and offensive play-caller Shane Steichen kept the Colts offense humming.

Before his arrival in Indianapolis, Steichen helped Justin Herbert break multiple rookie passing records and had a hand in Jalen Hurts' MVP-caliber year in 2022. As one of the league's best offensive play-callers, he could utilize Richardson's dual-threat playmaking ability like he did with Hurts and turn the Colts into a scoring juggernaut.

The Colts are running back their starting offensive line from last season and added a few rookie wideouts in Adonai Mitchell and Anthony Gould. Mitchell, who averaged 15.1 receiving yards per game during his three years in college, can be an explosive threat in the vertical passing game.

As the 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year, Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud deservedly earned a lot of buzz. Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence recently signed an extension that tied Joe Burrow's deal for the highest average annual salary among quarterbacks.

But if Steichen continues to work his magic on Richardson, the Colts could take over the spotlight in the AFC South this year.

AFC West: Can Jim Harbaugh Quick-Fix the Chargers, Too?

With the exception of the San Diego Toreros, Jim Harbaugh's teams (college and pro) have won more games in his first year than in the campaign before his arrival.

In 2009, the San Francisco 49ers went 6-10 and finished third in the NFC West. The following year—Harbaugh's first at the helm—they went 13-3, won their division and made it to the NFC Championship Game. They advanced to the Super Bowl the following season.

Harbaugh could have a similar impact on the Los Angeles Chargers, who finished last in the AFC West with a 5-12 record in 2023.

After winning a national championship with the 15-0 Michigan Wolverines this past season, Harbaugh is now taking over a roster that features a Pro Bowl quarterback in Justin Herbert and a few Pro Bowl/All-Pro-caliber defensive players in Khalil Mack, Joey Bosa, Derwin James Jr. and Denzel Perryman.

The Chargers also spent the No. 5 overall pick on offensive tackle Joe Alt, who will line up on the opposite side of 2021 Pro Bowl left tackle Rashawn Slater.

Los Angeles needs wide receivers Joshua Palmer, Quentin Johnston and rookie second-rounder Ladd McConkey to fill a major void following the departure of Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. With that said, offensive coordinator Greg Roman could operate a run-heavy offensive attack that features running backs Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins.

The Chargers offense has question marks with Alt moving to the right side and big cleats to fill at wide receiver. Yet Harbaugh's track record suggests that this team could be the biggest threat to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West this year.

NFC East: Did Nick Sirianni Choose His New Coordinators Wisely?

The Philadelphia Eagles' fall from Super Bowl contenders in 2022 to a flailing squad that completely collapsed at the end of the 2023 season illustrates the importance of coaching.

Following the 2022 campaign, the Eagles lost offensive coordinator Shane Steichen to the Indianapolis Colts and defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon to the Arizona Cardinals. To replace them, the Eagles promoted quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson to offensive coordinator and hired defensive coordinator Sean Desai. However, the latter lost play-calling responsibilities to Matt Patricia late in the season (h/t Fox Sports' Jay Glazer).

In terms of scoring and total yards on both offense and defense, the Eagles took a step back last season. Nowhere was that more evident than on defense, where they plummeted to 30th in points allowed and 26th in yards allowed.

While the Eagles offense finished top eight in both scoring and yards, it ran off the rails by the end of the season. They averaged only 18.9 points per game between Week 13 and the NFC Wild Card Round.

This offseason, Philadelphia has replaced Johnson and Desai with Kellen Moore and Vic Fangio, respectively. Both Moore and Fangio have solid resumes with top-10 units in scoring or yards in recent years.

The Eagles have made the playoffs in three consecutive seasons with a balanced roster on both sides of the ball. But to knock off the Dallas Cowboys from the top spot in the NFC East, Moore and Fangio must be significant upgrades over Johnson and the Desai-Patricia combination.

NFC North: Can Jordan Love Continue to Ascend as a Starter?

Packers QB Jordan Love Stacy Revere/Getty Images

In his first year as the Green Bay Packers' full-time starting quarterback, Jordan Love proved that he was ready to replace four-time league MVP Aaron Rodgers, whom the team traded to the New York Jets last offseason.

During the regular season, Love completed 64.2 percent of his pass attempts for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. On Wild Card Weekend, he lit up the Dallas Cowboys' fifth-ranked pass defense for 272 yards and three touchdowns.

Despite having only 18 career starts under his belt, Love could soon be one of the league's highest-paid quarterbacks. During an appearance on 97.3 The Game, general manager Brian Gutekunst said the team wants to work out an extension with him before training camp.

While Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams begins his transition from college to the pros and the Minnesota Vikings look for stability at quarterback following Kirk Cousins' departure in free agency, the Packers have the best shot to topple the Detroit Lions in the NFC North.

Love started to hit his stride around the time that the Packers beat the Lions 29-22 in Detroit on Thanksgiving. The Packers have beaten the Bears 10 straight times, and they can keep up with the high-scoring Lions with Love at the helm.

NFC South: Will Kirk Cousins Bounce Back Into Pro Bowl Form?

Falcons QB Kirk Cousins Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images

Before suffering a season-ending Achilles injury last October, Kirk Cousins was playing at a Pro Bowl level. He averaged more than 290 passing yards per game while completing 69.5 percent of his passes with 18 touchdowns and only five interceptions.

In his six seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, Cousins threw for 171 touchdowns and 55 interceptions with a 67.9 percent completion rate. Although the Vikings only won one division title with Cousins, the Atlanta Falcons could make an immediate jump to the top of the NFC South with him.

Cousins will no longer face a team that has a four-time MVP quarterback like the Green Bay Packers had in Aaron Rodgers up until 2022. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have won the NFC South while hovering around .500 over each of the past two years.

If Cousins plays anywhere close to how he did during his time with the Vikings, he could help the Falcons beat out the Buccaneers for the NFC South title.

Not only does Cousins have a talented pass-catching group that includes Kyle Pitts, Drake London and Darnell Mooney, but new head coach Raheem Morris plans to feed budding star running back Bijan Robinson on the ground.

In 2023, the Buccaneers finished with the NFL's fewest rushing yards per game. This offseason, they lost offensive coordinator Dave Canales, who accepted the Carolina Panthers' head coaching position.

With Cousins and his supporting cast, Atlanta may have the most balanced offense and the best team in the NFC South.

NFC West: Can Rams' Young Defenders Compensate for the Loss of Aaron Donald?

Rams DT Kobie Turner Ric Tapia/Getty Images

Even in a quarterback-centric league, Aaron Donald's retirement will have an impact on the NFC West division race.

NFC West quarterbacks Brock Purdy, Geno Smith and Kyler Murray should all feel relieved that they no longer have to worry about the three-time Defensive Player of the Year generating pressure up the middle. Murray confirmed as much a few months ago.

However, the Rams' up-and-coming wave of defenders could still wreak havoc collectively.

As rookies last year, defensive tackle Kobie Turner and edge-rusher Byron Young recorded 17 sacks and 50 pressures combined.

In the first round of this year's draft, Los Angeles selected edge-rusher Jared Verse, who logged 29.5 tackles for loss and 18 sacks during his two seasons at Florida State.

In 2023, the Rams fielded a top-eight scoring offense that was capable of keeping pace with the San Francisco 49ers. If their front seven develops into a formidable group sans Donald, the Rams could edge past the reigning NFC champions for the NFC West division title.
