MLB Power Rankings 2024: Phillies Back on Top While Astros, Braves, Red Sox All Climb

Joel Reuter

A pair of series wins last week were enough for the Philadelphia Phillies to move back into the No. 1 spot in Bleacher Report's weekly MLB power rankings, while several high-profile teams behind them made notable climbs.

The Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, Houston Astros and Tampa Bay Rays were among the biggest climbers of the week, with the Cincinnati Reds, Kansas City Royals, Toronto Blue Jays and Washington Nationals moving in the opposite direction.

With the start of July now just a week away, the line between buyer and seller will start to be a major talking point, and for teams slotted in the middle of the pack, the coming weeks will be huge in determining which direction their season goes.

For now, here's an updated look at where all 30 teams stand.

Nos. 30-28

Ryan McMahon Hyoung Chang/The Denver Post

30. Chicago White Sox (21-58)

Previous Rank: 30

Last Week: 1-2 vs. HOU, 1-2 @ DET

Star of the Week: SP Drew Thorpe (1 GS, W, 6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 4 BB, 5 K)

It took the White Sox a staggering 74 games before they recorded their 20th victory of the season, and it has now been more than a month since they last picked up a series win back on May 15 against the Washington Nationals. Left-hander Garrett Crochet will be one of the prizes of the 2024 trade deadline.

29. Colorado Rockies (27-51)

Previous Rank: 28

Last Week: 1-3 vs. LAD, 1-2 vs. WAS

Star of the Week: 3B Ryan McMahon (11-for-25, 2 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI)

While it sounds like Ryan McMahon is going to stay put, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post suggested that the Rockies could move catchers Elías Díaz and Jacob Stallings, second baseman Brendan Rodgers, outfielder Jake Cave, starting pitchers Cal Quantrill and Austin Gomber and reliever Jalen Beeks.

28. Miami Marlins (27-50)

Previous Rank: 29

Last Week: 2-1 vs. STL, 2-1 vs. SEA

Star of the Week: OF Jesús Sánchez (7-for-23, 2 2B, 3 HR, 6 RBI)

The Marlins recorded three straight walk-off wins last week, and they have played well when things stay close all season with a 12-9 record in one-run games and an 8-4 record in extra innings. They were just 2-11 in June heading into last week when they righted the ship with a pair of series wins.

Nos. 27-25

Tyler Anderson Lachlan Cunningham/Getty Images

27. Oakland Athletics (29-51)

Previous Rank: 27

Last Week: 2-1 vs. KC, 1-2 vs. MIN

Star of the Week: SP Joey Estes (1 GS, ND, 6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K)

The Athletics have only scored 69 runs in 21 games in June, and they were shut out for the third time this month and the eighth time this year in a 3-0 loss on Sunday. The Oakland front office pulled off its first trade of the season on Sunday, sending J.D. Davis to the New York Yankees in exchange for Jordan Groshans and cash.

26. Los Angeles Angels (30-46)

Previous Rank: 26

Last Week: 1-2 vs. MIL, 1-1 @ LAD

Star of the Week: SP Tyler Anderson (1 GS, L, 7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K)

With another quality start on Wednesday, left-hander Tyler Anderson now has a 2.48 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 94.1 innings this year. The 34-year-old is in the second season of a three-year, $39 million deal and could be one of the most sought-after pitchers on the trade block this summer, though his 4.55 FIP does give some reason for pause.

25. Detroit Tigers (36-41)

Previous Rank: 24

Last Week: 0-3 @ ATL, 2-1 vs. CWS

Star of the Week: SP Reese Olson (2 GS, W, ND, 12.1 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 11 K)

The Tigers snapped a string of four straight series losses when they took two of three from the Chicago White Sox over the weekend, and they are still in striking distance of contention at 5.5 games back in the wild-card standings. The trio of Tarik Skubal (15 GS, 2.50 ERA, 105 K, 90.0 IP), Jack Flaherty (14 GS, 2.92 ERA, 108 K, 83.1 IP) and Reese Olson (15 GS, 3.35 ERA, 72 K, 83.1 IP) is reason enough to not completely write them off just yet.

Nos. 24-22

Hunter Greene Justin Berl/Getty Images

24. San Francisco Giants (36-42)

Previous Rank: 20

Last Week: 1-2 @ CHC, 0-3 @ STL

Star of the Week: C Patrick Bailey (8-for-21, 2 HR, 2 RBI)

The Giants are now 16-25 with a minus-33 run differential on the road. They entered June with a .500 record, but they have steadily slid down the rankings. Now they head home for seven games with the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers as they try to start chipping away at the hole they have dug the last few weeks.

23. Cincinnati Reds (36-41)

Previous Rank: 17

Last Week: 1-2 @ PIT, 1-2 vs. BOS

Star of the Week: SP Hunter Greene (1 GS, ND, 6.1 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 9 K)

The Reds have scored more than four runs just twice in their last 14 games, and that lack of offensive production has undercut a 3.50 ERA from the pitching staff in June that ranks sixth in the majors. Shortstop Elly De La Cruz leads the majors in steals (37) and strikeouts (103) through 77 games.

22. Toronto Blue Jays (35-42)

Previous Rank: 13

Last Week: 0-3 vs. BOS, 0-3 @ CLE

Star of the Week: SP Chris Bassitt (1 GS, ND, 6.0 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K)

The Blue Jays were swept in back-to-back series for the first time since 2019 last week, and that was accompanied by news that top prospect Orelvis Martinez had been slapped with an 80-game PED suspension. They are likely now a few steps closer to selling aggressively next month, and they could completely reshape the MLB landscape with a fire sale.

Nos. 21-19

Paul Skenes Justin Berl/Getty Images

21. Pittsburgh Pirates (37-40)

Previous Rank: 21

Last Week: 2-1 vs. CIN, 1-2 vs. TB

Star of the Week: SP Paul Skenes (2 GS, W, ND, 13.0 IP, 12 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 15 K)

With two more strong starts against the Cincinnati Reds (6.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 7 K) and Tampa Bay Rays (7.0 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 8 K) last week, rookie phenom Paul Skenes now has a 2.14 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and a 61-to-8 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 46.1 innings. The 22-year-old might already be a top-10 pitcher in baseball, and it will be a crime if he's not at the All-Star Game.

20. Chicago Cubs (37-41)

Previous Rank: 25

Last Week: 2-1 vs. SF, 1-2 vs. NYM

Star of the Week: SP Jameson Taillon (1 GS, W, 7.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 10 K)

The Cubs temporarily halted their precipitous slide down the rankings with a series win over the Giants, but a series loss to the New York Mets leaves them trending down once again. Rookie Shōta Imanaga suffered his first real clunker on Friday when he gave up 11 hits and 10 earned runs in three innings of work, raising his ERA more than a run from 1.89 to 2.96.

19. Texas Rangers (37-40)

Previous Rank: 18

Last Week: 1-2 vs. NYM, 3-0 vs. KC

Star of the Week: SP Max Scherzer (1 GS, W, 5.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K)

Max Scherzer made his 2024 debut on Saturday with five shutout innings of one-hit ball against the Kansas City Royals, and the Rangers have been treading water all season to get to the point where they have a healthy rotation. A staff of Scherzer, Nathan Eovaldi, Jon Gray, Michael Lorenzen and Andrew Heaney is now a strength, and more reinforcements are on the way with Jacob deGrom and Tyler Mahle both working toward returns of their own.

Nos. 18-16

CJ Abrams Dustin Bradford/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

18. New York Mets (37-39)

Previous Rank: 19

Last Week: 2-1 @ TEX, 2-1 @ CHC

Star of the Week: C Francisco Alvarez (11-for-22, 3 2B, 2 HR, 6 RBI)

Since catcher Francisco Alvarez returned on June 11 following a 45-game absence while recovering from thumb surgery, the Mets have gone 9-3 and the young catcher has hit .364/.417/.606 over 40 plate appearances. Now they will look to climb above the .500 mark for the first time since May 2 as they welcome the Yankees and Astros to town this week.

17. Washington Nationals (38-39)

Previous Rank: 12

Last Week: 1-2 vs. ARI, 2-1 @ COL

Star of the Week: SS CJ Abrams (8-for-18, 3 2B, HR, 3 RBI, SB)

The Nationals had their run of three straight series wins halted by the Arizona Diamondbacks, but they bounced back nicely with a road series win over the Rockies at Coors Field. Top prospect James Wood returned to action at Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday after missing nearly a month with a hamstring injury, and he went 2-for-5 with a home run on Saturday.

16. Arizona Diamondbacks (38-40)

Previous Rank: 16

Last Week: 2-1 @ WAS, 1-2 @ PHI

Star of the Week: OF Lourdes Gurriel (10-for-21, HR, RBI)

The D-backs lost two of three over the weekend in a rematch of last year's NLCS, and catcher Gabriel Moreno joined a long list of key injuries when he went on the injured list with a thumb sprain. The pitching staff ranks 28th in the majors with a 5.14 ERA in June, yet the team has still managed to post a 13-8 record this month.

Nos. 15-13

Ronel Blanco Tim Warner/Getty Images

15. Tampa Bay Rays (38-40)

Previous Rank: 22

Last Week: 2-1 @ MIN, 2-1 @ PIT

Star of the Week: OF Josh Lowe (9-for-21, 2 2B, 3 HR, 7 RBI)

The Rays have been as high as No. 8 and as low as No. 24 in our rankings this season, and that speaks to a level of consistency that seems to be missing from this year's team. A pair of series wins on the road could help jump-start a lackluster season, and Josh Lowe coming to life at the plate has provided the offense with a much-needed boost.

14. Houston Astros (38-40)

Previous Rank: 23

Last Week: 2-1 @ CWS, 3-0 vs. BAL

Star of the Week: SP Ronel Blanco (1 GS, W, 7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K)

The Astros made a statement over the weekend with a three-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles, outscoring one of the best teams in baseball by a 27-13 margin. They enter the week riding a five-game winning streak and poised to keep things rolling with the Rockies, Mets and Blue Jays up next on the schedule.

13. St. Louis Cardinals (39-37)

Previous Rank: 15

Last Week: 1-2 @ MIA, 3-0 vs. SF

Star of the Week: OF Brendan Donovan (11-for-26, 2 2B, 3 HR, 9 RBI)

The Cardinals have made up some ground in the standings this month, and a pitching staff that ranks fourth in the majors with a 3.47 ERA in June is largely to thank for their recent success. The veteran trio of Sonny Gray, Kyle Gibson and Miles Mikolas has shouldered the load in the starting rotation.

Nos. 12-10

Bailey Ober Brandon Vallance/Getty Images

12. San Diego Padres (41-41)

Previous Rank: 14

Last Week: 1-2 @ PHI, 3-1 vs. MIL

Star of the Week: OF Jackson Merrill (9-for-25, 2B, 3 HR, 6 RBI)

After showing little in the way of extra-base power during the first two months of the season, rookie Jackson Merrill is hitting .312/.346/.649 with five doubles, seven home runs and 13 RBI in June. Ace Yu Darvish is expected to rejoin the team on Wednesday against the Washington Nationals after missing nearly a month with a groin strain.

11. Kansas City Royals (42-37)

Previous Rank: 9

Last Week: 1-2 @ OAK, 0-3 @ TEX

Star of the Week: SP Seth Lugo (1 GS, ND, 6.2 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 8 K)

For the first time since the May 6 version of our weekly rankings, the Royals are outside the Top 10, and they are now 7-13 with a minus-35 run differential this month after getting swept by the Texas Rangers. They enter the week a half-game behind the Boston Red Sox for the third AL wild-card spot.

10. Minnesota Twins (43-35)

Previous Rank: 8

Last Week: 1-2 vs. TB, 2-1 @ OAK

Star of the Week: SP Bailey Ober (1 GS, W, 9.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 10 K)

The Twins bullpen faltered last week with one blown save and three losses, and what was a major strength last season has been a question mark this year as they have 28 blown saves in 66 chances. Starter Bailey Ober took matters into his own hands on Saturday with the team's first complete game of the year.

Nos. 9-7

Jarren Duran Dylan Buell/Getty Images

9. Boston Red Sox (42-36)

Previous Rank: 11

Last Week: 3-0 @ TOR, 2-1 @ CIN

Star of the Week: OF Jarren Duran (11-for-28, 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 3 SB)

The Red Sox continue to be a much better team on the road (24-16, +54 RD) than they are at Fenway Park (18-20, -6 RD). And with 12 of their next 18 games at home, that trend will have to change if they want to solidify their status as buyers. The return of rookie outfielder Wilyer Abreu on Saturday should provide a nice boost for the offense.

8. Seattle Mariners (45-35)

Previous Rank: 5

Last Week: 1-2 @ CLE, 1-2 @ MIA

Star of the Week: SP Logan Gilbert (1 GS, W, 8.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K)

With a stacked starting rotation and a mediocre offense, the Mariners have managed to climb to double-digit games above .500. And even with a pair of series losses last week, they still have a six-game lead in the AL West standings. No team is in more obvious need of an impactful offensive addition at the trade deadline.

7. Milwaukee Brewers (45-33)

Previous Rank: 6

Last Week: 2-1 @ LAA, 1-3 @ SD

Star of the Week: 2B Brice Turang (11-for-32, 2B, 3B, 2 HR, 8 RBI)

Brice Turang hit .218/.285/.300 for a 60 OPS+ with only 18 extra-base hits in 448 plate appearances last year, making his uptick in production one of the biggest surprises of the 2024 season. The 24-year-old has raised his OPS by nearly 200 points, hitting .294/.357/.420 with 21 extra-base hits and 26 steals while also providing elite defense at second base.

Nos. 6-4

Shohei Ohtani Michael Owens/MLB Photos via Getty Images

6. Atlanta Braves (43-32)

Previous Rank: 10

Last Week: 3-0 vs. DET, 2-1 @ NYY

Star of the Week: SP Spencer Schwellenbach (1 GS, W, 6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K)

Here come the Braves! After a rocky month of May and a slow start to June, they have gone 8-2 in their last 10 games, including a big series win on the road at Yankee Stadium over the weekend. The recent performance of outfielder Ramón Laureano and starting pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach has potentially plugged two major holes on the roster.

5. Cleveland Guardians (49-26)

Previous Rank: 7

Last Week: 2-1 vs. SEA, 3-0 vs. TOR

Star of the Week: 1B Josh Naylor (10-for-25, 3 2B, 3 HR, 8 RBI)

Not enough is being made about the season Steven Kwan is having for the Guardians. The 26-year-old continues to be one of baseball's best contact hitters, batting .390 with just 16 strikeouts in 222 plate appearances, but he has also raised his slugging percentage from .370 to .575 while already surpassing last year's home run total.

4. Los Angeles Dodgers (48-31)

Previous Rank: 4

Last Week: 3-1 @ COL, 1-1 vs. LAA

Star of the Week: DH Shohei Ohtani (11-for-24, 3 2B, 4 HR, 11 RBI, SB)

The Dodgers had a rare Sunday off-day, and they will have more opportunity to recharge this coming week with off days on Thursday and next Monday in between series against the Chicago White Sox and rival San Francisco Giants who are both struggling right now. Can they extend their NL West lead to double-digit games heading into July?

Nos. 3-1

Cristopher Sánchez Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images

3. New York Yankees (52-28)

Previous Rank: 2

Last Week: 1-2 vs. BAL, 1-2 vs. ATL

Star of the Week: SP Nestor Cortes (2 GS, W, L, 13.0 IP, 10 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 13 K)

Last week's three-game losing streak was the first time all season the Yankees have lost more than two games in a row, so they have earned the benefit of the doubt of that being just a bump in the road. That said, another series loss to the Orioles dropped them to 2-5 with a minus-18 run differential against their toughest competition in the AL East race.

2. Baltimore Orioles (49-28)

Previous Rank: 1

Last Week: 2-1 @ NYY, 0-3 @ HOU

Star of the Week: SS Gunnar Henderson (8-for-24, 3 2B, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 4 SB)

A grueling schedule finally seemed to catch up to the Orioles over the weekend as they rattled off series wins over the Rays, Braves, Phillies and Yankees before getting swept by the Astros in Houston. Now they head home and welcome the Guardians and Rangers to town as the gauntlet continues.

1. Philadelphia Phillies (51-26)

Previous Rank: 3

Last Week: 2-1 vs. SD, 2-1 vs. ARI

Star of the Week: SP Cristopher Sánchez (2 GS, 2 W, 14.0 IP, 9 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 9 K)

With two strong seven-inning outings last week, left-hander Cristopher Sánchez now has a 2.67 ERA in 84.1 innings. Not bad for the No. 5 starter in what has been baseball's best starting rotation, and the Phillies rewarded his strong start to the year with a four-year, $22.5 million extension last week. With Johan Rojas optioned to the minors, it will be a combination of Brandon Marsh, Cristian Pache and David Dahl alongside Nick Castellanos in the outfield going forward.
