Cam Heyward's future with the Pittsburgh Steelers has been a focal point this offseason, but he doesn't want to play for another NFL team.
He took to social media Sunday to clarify that his "goal" is to remain with the team that selected him in the first round of the 2011 NFL draft:
The 35-year-old is entering the final season of his contract and just said on Friday he is at least considering playing elsewhere during the 2025 season as he and the Steelers cannot find a solution for his contract.
"I have talked to my wife, and we know the reality, and we have had those talks, and she said it could be fun to play somewhere else," Heyward said, per The Athletic's Mark Kaboly. "If that is what is needed to be done, then so be it. But I am still enjoying the ride here this year.
"I don't even know which way to even lean. We will see what happens. But I can assure you this: I will be playing in 2025, I will tell you that."
Earlier this month, Heyward turned heads when he said he planned on playing for at least three more seasons even after skipping the first two weeks of OTAs because of his contract situation, per Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
From the Steelers' point of view, Heyward is a franchise legend with six Pro Bowls and three First-Team All-Pro selections on his resume. However, he is also at the back end of his career and coming off a season where he missed six games because of a groin injury that required surgery.
If Pittsburgh knew for sure the 2022 version of Heyward that posted 74 tackles and 10.5 sacks as a Pro Bowler would be there for the foreseeable future, the two sides likely would have already come to terms on a contract.
For now, though, there is still some uncertainty.
