Outside of a handful of clear-cut contenders at the top, the MLB landscape is littered with teams toeing the line between contender and non-contender as we move ever closer to the annual trade deadline.
There are currently 14 teams within five games on either side of a .500 record, and that means one hot week from one of them can send the club flying up the weekly rankings.
This week, it was the Arizona Diamondbacks, St. Louis Cardinals and Washington Nationals who made a significant climb in the rankings, while the Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants made big moves in the other direction.
That shuffling will continue in the coming weeks as the teams in the middle of the field try to make a decisive push up the standings.
For now, here's an updated look at where all 30 teams stand.
Nos. 30-28
30. Chicago White Sox (19-54)
Previous Rank: 30
Last Week: 1-3 @ SEA, 1-2 @ ARI
Star of the Week: SP Garrett Crochet (1 GS, ND, 7.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 13 K)
With one win each against the Mariners and D-backs, the White Sox managed to trim their futility pace below 120 losses for the first time in weeks. Expect a full-blown fire sale leading up to the trade deadline, so it might be just a matter of time before they are back on an all-time awful trajectory.
29. Miami Marlins (23-48)
Previous Rank: 29
Last Week: 1-2 @ NYM, 0-3 @ WAS
Star of the Week: SP Roddery Muñoz (1 GS, ND, 6.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K)
The Marlins are now 2-11 with a minus-47 run differential in June, and the offense has managed just 26 total runs during that stretch. If Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Josh Bell both end up moving at the trade deadline, this could be one of the worst offenses in recent memory over the final few months.
28. Colorado Rockies (25-46)
Previous Rank: 28
Last Week: 1-2 @ MIN, 1-2 vs. PIT
Star of the Week: 3B Ryan McMahon (7-for-24, 4 2B, 2 HR, 3 RBI, SB)
A quick update on the Rockies' trade-deadline plans:
"The Colorado Rockies will trade All-Star catcher Elias Díaz. They will not trade infielder Ryan McMahon, who should make the All-Star team this year," Bob Nightengale of USA Today wrote at the weekend.
Díaz is in the final season of a three-year, $14.5 million deal, though he is currently sidelined with a calf strain.
Nos. 27-25
27. Oakland Athletics (26-48)
Previous Rank: 26
Last Week: 0-3 @ SD, 0-4 @ MIN
Star of the Week: 1B Tyler Soderstrom (10-for-27, 4 HR, 8 RBI)
With a nine-game losing streak, the Athletics have gone from surprisingly competitive in the early going to getting steamrolled by the competition the way they did throughout the 2023 campaign. Setup relievers Lucas Erceg and Austin Adams could be hot commodities at the trade deadline if they decide to sell.
26. Los Angeles Angels (28-43)
Previous Rank: 27
Last Week: 1-2 @ ARI, 2-1 @ SF
Star of the Week: SP José Soriano (1 GS, W, 8.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K)
The Angels pitching staff gave up 13, 11 and nine runs in three of their games last week, and they rank 29th in the majors with a 5.80 ERA as a team in June. They will be a team to watch at the deadline with guys such as Tyler Anderson, Taylor Ward and Carlos Estévez all capable of helping contenders.
25. Chicago Cubs (34-38)
Previous Rank: 18
Last Week: 1-2 @ TB, 1-2 vs. STL
Star of the Week: SP Justin Steele (1 GS, ND, 6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K)
The Cubs have not had a winning streak of more than two games since April 26, and they have now lost nine of their last 10 series. They may still be only four games below .500 and squarely in a wide-open NL wild-card race, but this team has zero momentum heading into the summer.
Nos. 24-22
24. Detroit Tigers (34-37)
Previous Rank: 14
Last Week: 1-2 vs. WAS, 1-2 @ HOU
Star of the Week: OF Riley Greene (9-for-27, 3B, 3 HR, 11 RBI)
The Tigers are 3-7 in their last 10 games, and as a result, they have slid from the top of a large collection of teams hovering around the .500 mark to the bottom. If they continue to stumble in the coming weeks, Jack Flaherty (13 GS, 3.01 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, 100 K, 77.2 IP) could be one of the most sought after arms on the summer trade market.
23. Houston Astros (33-39)
Previous Rank: 23
Last Week: 1-2 @ SF, 2-1 vs. DET
Star of the Week: SP Ronel Blanco (2 GS, 2 W, 13.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 16 K)
The Astros made the decision to cut ties with veteran first baseman José Abreu over the weekend, eating almost $30 million in the process. If they can string together some wins in the coming weeks, it will be interesting to see if they get involved in the markets for Pete Alonso and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
22. Tampa Bay Rays (34-38)
Previous Rank: 20
Last Week: 0-1 vs. BAL, 2-1 vs. CHC, 1-2 @ ATL
Star of the Week: OF José Siri (7-for-26, 3 2B, 2 HR, 3 RBI)
The Rays are 9-16 in their last 25 games and have gone from presumptive contenders in the AL East to a team toeing the line between buying and selling at the trade deadline. The cost-conscious front office could shop high-priced players such as Zach Eflin, Randy Arozarena, Yandy Díaz and Isaac Paredes if they decide to reload.
Nos. 21-19
21. Pittsburgh Pirates (34-37)
Previous Rank: 17
Last Week: 1-2 @ STL, 2-1 @ COL
Star of the Week: SP Paul Skenes (1 GS, ND, 6.1 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 8 K)
Where do I sign the petition to have Paul Skenes at the All-Star Game? The most hyped pitching prospect since Stephen Strasburg has lived up to the hype early in his MLB career, posting a 2.43 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and a 46-to-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 33.1 innings over his first six starts.
20. San Francisco Giants (35-37)
Previous Rank: 13
Last Week: 2-1 vs. HOU, 1-2 vs. LAA
Star of the Week: OF Heliot Ramos (10-for-27, 2 2B, 2 HR, 7 RBI)
The Giants might have finally found their first homegrown offensive star in years in 2017 first-round pick Heliot Ramos, who has exploded with a post-hype breakout season. The former top prospect is hitting .326/.404/.561 with seven doubles, eight home runs and 30 RBI in 151 plate appearances.
19. New York Mets (33-37)
Previous Rank: 25
Last Week: 2-1 vs. MIA, 3-0 vs. SD
Star of the Week: DH J.D. Martinez (9-for-20, 3 2B, 3 HR, 9 RBI)
With a 9-2 record over the past two weeks, the Mets are suddenly just 1.5 games back in the wild-card standings. With 14 of their next 19 games on the road, the coming weeks will go a long way in determining if they can hang around long enough to buy or, at the very least, hold at the deadline.
Nos. 18-16
18. Texas Rangers (33-38)
Previous Rank: 19
Last Week: 2-1 @ LAD, 0-3 @ SEA
Star of the Week: SP Michael Lorenzen (1 GS, W, 7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K)
Future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer made his third rehab start at Triple-A Round Rock on Saturday as he moved closer to making his 2024 debut, tossing 4.2 innings and ramping up to 79 pitches. Given all the injuries they have weathered, sitting just five games under .500 at this point has to be considered a solid outcome.
17. Cincinnati Reds (34-37)
Previous Rank: 16
Last Week: 1-1 vs. CLE, 1-2 @ MIL
Star of the Week: 3B Jeimer Candelario (9-for-20, 3 2B, 3 HR, 9 RBI)
The Reds were rolling with a seven-game winning streak earlier this month, and they will look to regain that momentum with six of their next nine games against the Pittsburgh Pirates. After a slow start to the season after signing a three-year, $45 million deal during the offseason, Jeimer Candelario is hitting .356/.361/.729 with six home runs and 15 RBI in June.
16. Arizona Diamondbacks (35-37)
Previous Rank: 22
Last Week: 2-1 vs. LAA, 2-1 vs. CWS
Star of the Week: OF Corbin Carroll (7-for-23, 3 2B, 3B, 2 RBI, SB)
The D-backs are 10-5 in June and again looking like a postseason contender after closing out May with a five-game losing streak to slip to seven games below .500. Is there a more productive right side of the infield in baseball right now than Christian Walker (.820 OPS, 16 HR 49 RBI) and Ketel Marte (.852 OPS, 14 HR, 39 RBI)?
Nos. 15-13
15. St. Louis Cardinals (35-35)
Previous Rank: 24
Last Week: 2-1 vs. PIT, 2-1 @ CHC
Star of the Week: SP Miles Mikolas (2 GS, W, ND, 13.1 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 11 K)
Since stumbling through a seven-game losing streak that concluded on May 11, the Cardinals have the best record in the National League at 20-11. After struggling to a 6.43 ERA through his first eight starts, Miles Mikolas has a 2.76 ERA in 42.1 innings with six quality starts in his last seven outings.
14. San Diego Padres (37-38)
Previous Rank: 12
Last Week: 3-0 vs. OAK, 0-3 @ NYM
Star of the Week: OF Jackson Merrill (8-for-21, 2B, 4 HR, 6 RBI)
The Padres were outscored 18-8 by the Mets in a three-game series sweep, and they managed just one run on Friday and Saturday. They don't have another day off until a week from Thursday, and they have a tough week ahead facing off against the Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers.
13. Toronto Blue Jays (35-36)
Previous Rank: 15
Last Week: 1-2 @ MIL, 2-1 vs. CLE
Star of the Week: 2B Spencer Horwitz (8-for-21, 2B, 3 RBI)
The Blue Jays shook things up last week when they cut ties with Cavan Biggio and Daniel Vogelbach, and prospect Spencer Horwitz has taken over as the team's primary second baseman and leadoff hitter. With Alek Manoah undergoing internal brace surgery on his UCL, the No. 5 starter job is again a question mark.
Nos. 12-10
12. Washington Nationals (35-36)
Previous Rank: 21
Last Week: 2-1 @ DET, 3-0 vs. MIA
Star of the Week: SP DJ Herz (1 GS, W, 6.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 13 K)
With an 8-1 record in their last nine games, the Nationals are one of baseball's hottest teams. Left-hander DJ Herz was acquired from the Chicago Cubs last summer in exchange for rental bat Jeimer Candelario, and he is quickly developing into a long-term rotation piece with a 3.77 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 14.1 innings over his first three starts.
11. Boston Red Sox (37-35)
Previous Rank: 11
Last Week: 2-1 vs. PHI, 2-1 vs. NYY
Star of the Week: OF Jarren Duran (11-for-25, 4 2B, 4 RBI, 2 SB)
The Red Sox had played much better on the road than they did at home heading into last week, but that changed in decisive fashion with series wins over the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees who were No. 1 and No. 3 in last week's rankings, respectively. A healthy Masataka Yoshida should provide the offense with a welcome boost.
10. Atlanta Braves (38-31)
Previous Rank: 10
Last Week: 1-2 @ BAL, 2-1 vs. TB
Star of the Week: 1B Matt Olson (11-for-23, 4 2B, 2 HR, 4 RBI)
The lackluster Atlanta offense finally woke up last week with Matt Olson, Marcell Ozuna (10-for-24, 2 HR, 7 RBI), Austin Riley (7-for-23, 3 HR, 8 RBI) and Jarred Kelenic (6-for-21, 2 HR, 3 RBI) all swinging a big bat. They scored 22 runs in three games against Tampa Bay, and they head to Yankee Stadium this weekend.
Nos. 9-7
9. Kansas City Royals (41-32)
Previous Rank: 6
Last Week: 1-3 vs. NYY, 1-2 @ LAD
Star of the Week: SS Bobby Witt Jr. (11-for-28, 3 2B, 4 RBI, 2 SB)
With series losses to the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers last week, the Royals are now just 12-19 against teams with a winning record, and they will need to prove that early trend is a fluke to hold onto their spot in the Top 10. Is anyone having a more under-the-radar breakout season than Alec Marsh (12 GS, 3.63 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 67.0 IP)?
8. Minnesota Twins (40-32)
Previous Rank: 9
Last Week: 2-1 vs. COL, 4-0 vs. OAK
Star of the Week: SS Carlos Correa (17-for-31, 2B, 3 HR, 9 RBI)
The Twins have scored 63 runs while going 6-1 in their last seven games, and with Carlos Correa and Royce Lewis (10-for-24, 2B, 4 HR, 7 RBI) both healthy and swinging a hot bat, the offense is firing on all cylinders right now. A struggling Tampa Bay team is up next before three more games with the Athletics.
7. Cleveland Guardians (44-25)
Previous Rank: 5
Last Week: 1-1 @ CIN, 1-2 @ TOR
Star of the Week: OF Steven Kwan (13-for-22, 3 2B, 3 RBI)
He doesn't have enough at-bats to qualify for the leaderboard right now, but Steven Kwan is hitting .398/.456/.545 over 196 plate appearances this season as he continues to be one of baseball's best pure hitters. The battle at the top of the AL Central standings is shaping up to be a great one.
Nos. 6-4
6. Milwaukee Brewers (42-29)
Previous Rank: 7
Last Week: 2-1 vs. TOR, 2-1 vs. CIN
Star of the Week: SS Willy Adames (5-for-20, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 2 SB)
Since scoring two runs in three games while getting swept by the Philadelphia Phillies, the Brewers have responded with three straight series wins to solidify their standings as a top-tier team. Even with the St. Louis Cardinals charging hard, they still have a 6.5-game lead in the NL Central standings.
5. Seattle Mariners (43-31)
Previous Rank: 8
Last Week: 3-1 vs. CWS, 3-0 vs. TEX
Star of the Week: SP Bryce Miller (1 GS, ND, 7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 8 K)
The Mariners improved to an MLB-best 11-4 in June with a 5-0 shutout of the Texas Rangers on Sunday behind eight shutout innings from Logan Gilbert. They now have an 8.5-game lead over the defending champions in the AL West standings, which is the largest advantage of any division leader.
4. Los Angeles Dodgers (44-29)
Previous Rank: 2
Last Week: 1-2 vs. TEX, 2-1 vs. KC
Star of the Week: DH Shohei Ohtani (6-for-20, 4 HR, 5 RBI, SB)
The Dodgers were dealt a devastating blow on Sunday when Mookie Betts suffered a fractured hand on a hit-by-pitch, which will keep him sidelined for the foreseeable future.
"Manager Dave Roberts said Betts won't need surgery and the injury is not season ending, but there's no timetable for his return," Sarah Wexler of MLB.com wrote.
Miguel Rojas is the only other player who has started a game at shortstop this year, so he will likely see an expanded role, though depth at the position could now be a priority at the trade deadline.
Nos. 3-1
3. Philadelphia Phillies (47-24)
Previous Rank: 1
Last Week: 1-2 @ BOS, 1-2 @ BAL
Star of the Week: DH Kyle Schwarber (9-for-24, 2 2B, 3 HR, 7 RBI)
The Phillies fell to 10-10 in their last 20 games following Sunday's loss to the Baltimore Orioles. And while they still look like, arguably, the most complete team in baseball, their middling play of late is enough to knock them out of the No. 1 spot. Shortstop Trea Turner will be activated from the injured list on Monday, and he was hitting .343/.392/.460 through 148 plate appearances at the time of his hamstring injury.
2. New York Yankees (50-24)
Previous Rank: 3
Last Week: 3-1 @ KC, 1-2 @ BOS
Star of the Week: C Jose Trevino (6-for-15, 3 HR, 7 RBI)
The Yankees have a huge three-game series with the Baltimore Orioles starting on Tuesday, and ace Gerrit Cole is expected to make his long-awaited season debut on Wednesday. Things don't get any easier once that series wraps up as the Atlanta Braves come to town for a three-game weekend series.
1. Baltimore Orioles (47-24)
Previous Rank: 4
Last Week: 1-0 @ TB, 2-1 vs. ATL, 2-1 vs. PHI
Star of the Week: SS Gunnar Henderson (9-for-27, 2 2B, 2 HR, 4 RBI, SB)
The Orioles improved to 25-14 at Camden Yards with impressive series wins over the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies last week, and they are No. 1 in power rankings for the first time this season. Gunnar Henderson (22), Anthony Santander (17), Adley Rutschman (14), Ryan Mountcastle (11) and Jordan Westburg (11) all have double-digit home runs on the year.
