Lakers Rumors: JJ Redick Apparent Favorite for HC Job After Dan Hurley Contract Offer

It would appear that JJ Redick is firmly in the driver's seat for the Los Angeles Lakers' head-coaching position.

A "source close to the process" told NBA insider Marc Stein, "You know who is getting the job," seemingly referencing JJ Redick.

Another source indicated to Stein that "James Borrego's apparent lead in the Cleveland search could end up leaving Redick as the only top-tier candidate left on the Lakers' list that they have a clear shot at."

The Lakers were all in on UConn head coach Dan Hurley, reportedly offering him a six-year, $70 million deal that he turned down, per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. That came amidst reports that both Redick and Borrego were also potential candidates.

After Hurley's rejection, Woj reported that the Lakers would "regroup and resume bringing in candidates for interviews with hope of hiring a coach by the NBA draft later this month."

One interesting factor, however, is how a potential candidate like Redick will react to clearly being the organization's No. 2 option during this process. It's a bit of an awkward starting point for a relationship, especially given Redick's complete inexperience as a head coach and the fact that the Lakers' gig is one of the highest-profile jobs in sports.

There is also a general lack of clarity around how the Lakers will look next season around the duo of LeBron James and Anthony Davis. It's clear the team needs to reshuffle its deck after going 47-35 last season, needing the Play-In Tournament to qualify for the postseason and promptly getting eliminated by the Denver Nuggets in five games in the first round.

But will that be small roster changes around the fringes? Or will the team make a major splash to acquire a third star?

There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding this team, and adding a first-time head coach into that particular fray is a big ask. Redick appears to be the heavy frontrunner for the gig at this point, but it's fair to question if its an ideal marriage for either party.
