David Benavidez vs. Oleksandr Gvozdyk: Fight Odds, Live Stream, Predictions

Alex Ballentine

Fomer super middleweight champion David Benavidez will make his light heavyweight debut with the interim WBC belt on the line against Oleksandr Gvozdyk on the undercard of Gervonta Davis vs. Frank Martin.

The two combatants have just one loss between them as the 20-1 Gvozdyk will look to prove that he's still part of the title picture in the 175-pound weight class.

The 37-year-old Ukrainian's only loss came to Artur Beterbiev in 2019 that prompted a near four-year layoff. However, Gvozdyk has gone 3-0 since making his return in February 2023.

That return will be tested against the uber-talented Benavidez. The rising star tried to get a mega fight against Canelo Alvarez but ultimately had to settle for this opportunity.

Both fighters have a lot on the line. Here's a look at all the info you need to catch the fight along with a preview and prediction.

All of the pressure will certainly be on Benavidez. He's being installed as a massive favorite over a former world champion in his first foray into a new weight class.

Benavidez has been chasing a fight at 168 pounds with Alvarez, but it has yet to materialize so he feels this is the right time to put on the added weight for his new weight class.

"I've been at super middleweight for the past 10 years, my whole career, and I feel like my body's getting bigger, I'm getting older, so I'm just growing as a man. I think it's time for me to move up to 175 (pounds. We're still hoping we can get that fight with Canelo at 168 but I think for right now, the best fight for me is to go to 175 and just see how it feels up there," Benavidez told Jose M. Romero of The Arizona Republic.

At the very least, this fight should give us an indication of how well Benavidez's stopping power translates in the heavier class. He has won 24 of his 28 bouts by stoppage and Gvozdyks's only loss was a 10th-round TKO loss.

Gvozdyk will test Benavidez's boxing skills with his ability to win fights on the outside. Benavidez's combination punching has a way of wearing down opponents and setting up his finishes, but he'll have to close the distance first.

Caleb Plant was able to have success against Benavidez early in their fight. Gvozdyk might have success with a similar game plan and is an even bigger opponent.

Prediction

There's a case to be made that Benavidez could be in danger of an upset. His desire to get his fight against Canelo combined with his opponent's world championship resume should give bettors reason for slight pause.

Ultimately, Benavidez has to know that a poor showing here would sink any chance at setting up a massive payday against Alvarez. That should be the impetus for him to put on a show Saturday night.

A locked in Benavidez is a threat to the entire light heavyweight division. That certainly includes his opponent this time around.
