While Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler has been the subject of trade rumors this offseason, the team made a move on Wednesday to lock up another one of its top players.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, the Heat plan to sign star center Bam Adebayo to a three-year, $166 million maximum contract extension. He would've been eligible for a four-year, $245 million supermax contract if he was selected to one of the three All-NBA teams, but Wednesday's agreement is a solid haul for the 26-year-old.

Adebayo had two years remaining on the five-year, $163 million extension he signed in 2020. Still, Miami was proactive in keeping him in the fold through the 2028-29 season. The decision comes after Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald reported in May that the Heat planned on offering him a "lucrative" extension this offseason despite the years he still had on his deal.

In 2023-24, Adebayo averaged 19.3 points, 10.4 rebounds and 3.9 assists on his way to earning his third career All-Star selection. He was named to the NBA All-Defensive first team for the first time in his career following four straight second-team selections.

Adebayo also placed third in Defensive Player of the Year voting behind Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert and San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama, his fifth straight year finishing in the top five in the voting for the coveted award.

While the Heat solidified their foundation by extending Adebayo, the situation with Butler is a bit more murky. Team owner Pat Riley raised some eyebrows earlier this offseason when he expressed disinterest in signing the 34-year-old to an extension this summer.

"We have not discussed that internally right now," Riley said in May. "We have to look at making that kind of commitment and when do we do it. We don't have to do it until 2025, actually. But we'll see. We haven't made a decision on it, and we haven't really in earnest discussed it."

Butler is under contract for $48.8 million in 2024-25 and has a player option for $52.4 million in 2025-26.

With Butler's status still in question, the Heat should feel a bit more secure after Wednesday's agreement with Adebayo, as he is the type of player who Miami can build around going forward.
