The New Orleans Saints restructured the contract of do-it-all offensive weapon Taysom Hill on Thursday to create additional salary-cap space for the 2024 season.

According to NOLA.com's Luke Johnson, the Saints converted nearly $9 million of Hill's base salary into a signing bonus, bringing down his 2024 cap number from $15.8 million to $9.2 million.

By saving about $6.6 million, the Saints are now around $12 million under the cap for the upcoming season.

That type of move comes with future consequences, though, as Hill's cap hit will grow to $18 million in 2025, and the Saints are now projected to be $88 million over the salary cap in 2025, per OverTheCap.com.

Hill, 33, is preparing to enter his eighth season with the Saints after they signed him as an undrafted free agent out of BYU before the 2017 season.

While Hill was a quarterback at BYU and has played some quarterback in the NFL, he has primarily settled into more of a utility role over the past couple of seasons with tight end being his primary position.

Last season was Hill's best from a pass-catching perspective, as he reeled in 33 receptions for 291 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran the ball 81 times, primarily as a wildcat quarterback, rushing for 401 yards and four scores.

His 11 passing attempts were his fewest since 2019, but he did complete six of them for 83 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions.

Veteran Derek Carr is locked in as the Saints' starting quarterback in 2024, and they selected Spencer Rattler in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL draft to potentially serve as the backup, meaning Hill can continue to focus on his unique role within the offense.

With a 9-8 record last season, the Saints tied the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the NFC South lead, but they lost out on the playoffs due to a tiebreaker.

Given the roster gymnastics they will likely have to do before the 2025 season to get cap compliant, there figures to be added pressure on the Saints to get over the hump and return to the playoffs this season.
