Video: Darren Waller Explains NFL Retirement and Searching for Love After Kelsey Plum

Darren Waller has opened up about his decision to retire from the NFL after nine seasons.

Speaking to TMZ Sports (starts at 1:05 mark), Waller explained he "reached a point where I don't have that 100 percent to give to the process" that is required to play in the league.

In a YouTube video released on Sunday announcing his retirement (starts at 3:15 mark), Waller said he experienced a "very scary" health situation last November that gave him clarity on his life.

Another topic that Waller addressed in the TMZ interview was "a lot of the work I'm doing right now" to redefine what love and relationships mean to him in the wake of his divorce from WNBA star Kelsey Plum (starts at 9:15 mark).

"Going into relationships, I had to be co-dependent and tap dance to please the partner," Waller said. "Or I had to self-sabotage the relationship before the other person did because of things that happened to me when I was younger. My whole definition of love has to change, and that's a lot of the work I'm doing right now."

Waller recently released a music video for his song titled "Who Knew (Her Perspective)." The lyrics and accompanying video appear to be about his relationship with Plum.

Waller and Plum were married in March 2023. They filed for divorce in April, with Plum writing in a post on social media that she is "devastated."

Waller spent the 2023 season with the New York Giants after being acquired in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders. He finished second on the team with 552 receiving yards in 12 games.

During his four seasons with the Raiders, Waller was one of the most productive receiving tight ends in the NFL. He had back-to-back seasons with 1,100 yards in 2019 and 2020, earning a Pro Bowl nod in 2020.

Injuries limited Waller to a total of 32 games over the past three seasons. He finished his career with 4,124 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns in 86 games with the Raiders, Giants and Baltimore Ravens.
