Swerve Strickland Beats Will Ospreay to Retain AEW Title at Forbidden Door 2024

Swerve Strickland beat international champion Will Ospreay at Forbidden Door on Sunday to retain the AEW World Championship.

Strickland hit Ospreay with Big Pressure to finish off the match.

This was an intense and fast-paced contest with some great spots.

Strickland's Swerve Stomp onto Ospreay on an announcers' table that didn't collapse notably got the crowd going.

Afterward, the two opponents showed each other great respect.

In the wake of Strickland beating Christian Cage at Double or Nothing to retain the AEW world title, a Casino Gauntlet Match was held on the ensuing episode of Dynamite to determine Swerve's opponent at Forbidden Door.

It was a star-studded field featuring wrestlers from multiple companies, but Ospreay outlasted Pac, Orange Cassidy, Claudio Castagnoli, Jay White, Rush, Hechicero, Lio Rush, Shota Umino and Místico to win.

For Ospreay, it was another huge victory and the continuation of what has been a dominant run since he officially signed with AEW in November.

Entering Forbidden Door, Ospreay had never lost a singles match in AEW, meaning Swerve's reign as AEW world champion was very much in peril.

Ospreay also had momentum on his side with several notable wins to his credit in the weeks leading up to Forbidden Door, including beating Roderick Strong for the International Championship at Double or Nothing, marking his first title win in AEW.

Additionally, Ospreay boasted a sterling record at Forbidden Door prior to this year's event, beating Cassidy at the show in 2022, and Kenny Omega at last year's Forbidden Door.

The decision to go with Ospreay vs. Strickland was surprising for many reasons, not the least of which is the fact that it felt like neither could afford to take a loss at the present time.

Also, since both Ospreay and Strickland are AEW wrestlers, it isn't the type of crossover match typically seen at Forbidden Door. However, since Ospreay was a top star in New Japan Pro-Wrestling for so many years, it still had a Forbidden Door-type feel.

All signs point toward Ospreay being an AEW world champion in the not-too-distant future, but after falling short in his opportunity against Swerve, he will have to wait a bit longer to make it a reality.
