Patrick Mahomes Says Chiefs Are 'Built' to Throw Deep During 2024 NFL Season

The Kansas City Chiefs are coming off back-to-back Super Bowl titles, but their offense may be even more explosive in 2024.

"I think this year we're going to have a team that's built to throw the ball deep," quarterback Patrick Mahomes said during a Thursday appearance on the Pat McAfee Show. "Coach [Andy] Reid's been preaching it all offseason, we're going to get back to throwing the deep ball. I have to be smart when we do that, but at the same time I want to be that explosive offense that we've seen in the past."

Wide receiver was a position of concern for Kansas City last season, and there are question marks about whether Rashee Rice will be suspended this season because of his involvement in a multi-car crash on the highway in March.

Yet the Chiefs addressed the position in multiple ways this offseason, which could leave them better equipped to take more of those chances on deep balls.

The AFC West team signed Marquise "Hollywood" Brown, giving Mahomes another weapon on the outside. Brown has a reception of at least 41 yards in each of his five seasons in the league, including an 83-yard one when he was a rookie and a 71-yard one in his second year.

As if that wasn't enough, the Chiefs drafted Xavier Worthy out of Texas in the first round.

All Worthy did was set the record with a 4.21-second 40-yard dash during the NFL Scouting Combine in March, underscoring how difficult it will be for cornerbacks to keep up with him in single coverage.

And he figures to see plenty of single coverage with opposing defenses so concerned with Travis Kelce in the middle of the field.

The end result could be no shortage of long passes as Mahomes and the Kansas City offense attempt to be even more dangerous in 2024.
