Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker stirred up controversy earlier this month with comments he made during his commencement speech at Benedictine College, but quarterback Patrick Mahomes has his back despite not agreeing with some of his opinions.

When asked about Butker's comments on Wednesday, Mahomes told reporters: "I've known him for seven years. I judge him by the character he shows every day and that's a good person. ... We're not always going to agree. He said certain things I don't agree with."

While speaking at the private Catholic liberal arts school in Kansas, Butker made comments disparaging Pride Month and President Joe Biden's stance on abortion as well as his response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He also told the women at the ceremony that they were probably more excited about getting married and having children than receiving their degrees.

Mahomes wasn't the only person to weigh in on Butker's comments on Wednesday.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was also asked to give his thoughts on the matter and he told reporters, "I didn't think I need to. We're a microcosm of life. ... We all respect each other's opinions. We all have a voice."

While speaking at the league's annual meetings in Nashville, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said: "We have over 3,000 players. We have executives around the league. They have diversity of opinions and thoughts just like America does. That's something we treasure."

He then deferred to the league's statement that declared Butker's "views are not those of the NFL as an organization."

Butker has spent his entire seven-year career with the Chiefs, winning three Super Bowls with the team.
