MLB Power Rankings: Dodgers, Phillies, Yankees Continue to Dominate as Astros Wake Up

Joel Reuter

More than a quarter of the way into the 2024 MLB season, the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies have started to separate themselves from the pack as baseball's top tier of teams.

That said, the Atlanta Braves and Baltimore Orioles are both one hot stretch away from joining that group, and the list of potential contenders behind those teams remains long, with even the Houston Astros showing signs of life after their dreadful start.

With 23 teams entering play on Monday no worse than five games away from a .500 record, the shuffling continues on a weekly basis in our MLB power rankings.

For now, here's how all 30 teams stack up across baseball.

Nos. 30-28

Ryan McMahon Dustin Bradford/Getty Images

30. Chicago White Sox (14-33)

Previous Rank: 28

Last Week: 2-1 vs. WAS, 0-3 @ NYY

It's back to the bottom of the rankings for the White Sox after they were outscored 17-5 while getting swept by the Yankees over the weekend, bringing their season run differential to an MLB-worst minus-99. On a positive note, left-hander Garrett Crochet has a 1.23 ERA with 30 strikeouts in 22 innings over his last four starts.

29. Colorado Rockies (15-31)

Previous Rank: 29

Last Week: 3-0 @ SD, 0-3 @ SF

The Rockies ran their winning streak to seven games with a sweep of the Padres, but that hot stretch came to an abrupt halt when their pitching staff surrendered 28 runs in three games against the Giants. Third baseman Ryan McMahon is hitting .306/.387/.486 for an .873 OPS that ranks eight among qualified NL hitters.

28. Miami Marlins (15-33)

Previous Rank: 30

Last Week: 2-1 @ DET, 2-1 vs. NYM

First baseman Josh Bell went 10-for-26 with three doubles, one home run and six RBI in six games last week, and in the second season of a two-year, $33 million deal, he could play his way into being a solid trade chip for the Marlins if he can stay hot. Even with back-to-back series wins last week, this club still looks to be headed for a fire sale.

Nos. 27-25

Tyler Anderson Ron Jenkins/Getty Images

27. Oakland Athletics (19-30)

Previous Rank: 21

Last Week: 0-4 @ HOU, 0-3 @ KC

The A's are 2-13 with a minus-46 run differential in their last 15 games since a 20-4 blowout of the Marlins on May 4 brought their record to 17-17 to start the year. Flame-throwing closer Mason Miller will be frequently mentioned as a trade candidate in the coming months, and it will be interesting to see if anyone is willing to meet what will be a sky-high asking price.

26. Cincinnati Reds (19-28)

Previous Rank: 22

Last Week: 1-2 @ ARI, 1-3 @ LAD

The Reds are hitting .212 with a .606 OPS that ranks 29th in the majors in May while averaging a paltry 2.8 runs per game. And until the offense gets on track, the losses will continue to pile up. Their next nine games are at Great American Ball Park, so that should give the offense a good opportunity to return to form.

25. Los Angeles Angels (18-29)

Previous Rank: 26

Last Week: 1-2 vs. STL, 2-1 @ TEX

The starting rotation was a bright spot for the Angels over the weekend, with Tyler Anderson (7.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER), Patrick Sandoval (6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER) and José Soriano (7.2 IP, 5 H, 1 ER) all turning in quality starts. The pitching staff has been the issue for L.A. in recent years, but it's the offense that is holding the team back in 2024.

Nos. 24-22

Pete Alonso Jim McIsaac/Getty Images

24. New York Mets (21-25)

Previous Rank: 20

Last Week: 0-2 vs. PHI, 1-1 @ PHI, 1-2 @ MIA

The big story out of Mets camp last week was the report that slugger Pete Alonso turned down a seven-year, $158 million extension last summer, and that seemed like a more than fair offer considering the eight-year, $168 million deal Matt Olson signed with the Atlanta Braves in March. If the Mets keep losing games, Alonso could quickly line up as one of the biggest prizes of the trade deadline.

23. Washington Nationals (20-25)

Previous Rank: 18

Last Week: 1-2 @ CWS, 0-3 @ PHI

The Nationals have a bright future and got off to a better-than-expected start this season, but they still appear to be at least a few years away from making a legitimate push up the standings. That could mean Trevor Williams is one of the top pitchers available at this year's trade deadline. The 32-year-old has a 2.35 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 46 innings through his first nine starts, and he's making a team-friendly $7 million this season in the final year of his contract.

22. Toronto Blue Jays (20-25)

Previous Rank: 24

Last Week: 1-1 @ BAL, 1-2 vs. TB

Where has the Blue Jays' offense gone? They are hitting .229/.293/.348 and have stumbled to a 5-9 record with a minus-20 run differential in May, and infielder Davis Schneider is the only player on the team with at least 100 plate appearances and an OPS over .800. With six of their next nine games against the White Sox, now is their chance to right the ship.

Nos. 21-19

Alec Burleson Mike Stobe/Getty Images

21. St. Louis Cardinals (20-26)

Previous Rank: 27

Last Week: 2-1 @ LAA, 2-1 vs. BOS

After a 1-8 start to May, the Cardinals are now 5-2 in their last seven games following a pair of series wins last week. Alec Burleson (10-for-23, 2 2B, 2 HR, 4 RBI) and Lars Nootbaar (6-for-20, 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI) both had strong weeks at the plate, and they are currently flanking veterans Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado in the lineup.

20. Arizona Diamondbacks (22-25)

Previous Rank: 19

Last Week: 2-1 vs. CIN, 1-2 vs. DET

Despite posting a .500 record, the D-backs have been outscored by 27 runs in May, and now they are set to play 13 of their next 19 games on the road. Closer Paul Sewald has nailed down all three of his save chances with a 1.80 ERA, 0.60 WHIP and 9.0 K/9 in five appearances since returning from the injured list, so the pieces are falling into place for the bullpen.

19. Pittsburgh Pirates (22-26)

Previous Rank: 23

Last Week: 1-2 @ MIL, 3-1 @ CHC

Even with a sub-.500 record, it's hard not to be excited about the Pirates right now thanks to the dynamic rookie duo of Paul Skenes and Jared Jones on the mound, and the former was unhittable against the Cubs on Friday with 11 strikeouts over six no-hit innings in his second big league start. Slowly but surely, the pieces are falling into place for future success.

Nos. 18-16

Luis Matos Kavin Mistry/Getty Images

18. Houston Astros (21-26)

Previous Rank: 25

Last Week: 4-0 vs. OAK, 2-1 vs. MIL

The Astros are starting to erase that dreadful 12-24 start to the year, and with a 9-2 record in their last 11 games, they are knocking on the door of a .500 record once again. With the AL West as a whole off to a sluggish start, they enter play on Monday just four games back in the standings and are well-positioned to keep things rolling with the Angels and Athletics up next this week.

17. Boston Red Sox (23-24)

Previous Rank: 14

Last Week: 1-3 vs. TB, 1-2 @ STL

After going 15-11 with a plus-33 run differential in April on the strength of a starting rotation that was blowing past expectations, the Red Sox have stumbled to a 6-11 record in May. With the Rays, Brewers, Orioles, Tigers and Braves lined up over their next five series, this could be a make-or-break stretch as they look to prove they are legitimate contenders.

16. San Francisco Giants (23-25)

Previous Rank: 16

Last Week: 1-2 vs. LAD, 3-0 vs. COL

The Giants were dealt a massive blow when rookie center fielder Jung Hoo Lee suffered a torn labrum that required season-ending surgery. In his place, a healthy Luis Matos has been swinging one of the hottest bats in the majors, and the former top prospect joins Marco Luciano as a major X-factor for the offense.

Nos. 15-13

Jon Gray Ron Jenkins/Getty Images

15. Detroit Tigers (23-23)

Previous Rank: 15

Last Week: 1-2 vs. MIA, 2-1 @ ARI

The Tigers have faded a bit of late with a 5-10 record in their last 15 games, and the offense was shut out twice by a struggling Marlins team last week. With a breakout offensive star in Riley Greene, two of the AL's best pitchers in Tarik Skubal and Jack Flaherty and a standout rookie in Wenceel Pérez, this is clearly a team on the rise.

14. Texas Rangers (24-24)

Previous Rank: 13

Last Week: 1-2 vs. CLE, 1-2 vs. LAA

With news that Josh Jung will be sidelined longer than initially expected following wrist surgery, the emergence of Josh Smith (161 PA, .284/.373/.426, 15 XBH) has become even more important for the Rangers. Meanwhile, veteran Jon Gray has stepped up to lead a short-handed starting rotation, logging four straight quality starts with a 1.32 ERA in 27.1 innings during that span.

13. Minnesota Twins (24-22)

Previous Rank: 6

Last Week: 0-3 vs. NYY, 0-3 @ CLE

The Twins got eight innings of three-hit, two-run ball from Chris Paddack on Sunday and still couldn't avoid a sixth straight loss as they were swept by the division rival Guardians when Will Brennan walked it off with a three-run bomb against closer Jhoan Duran in the ninth.

"It can feel like you're underneath something and nothing that you do is going to get you out of it," Twins manager Rocco Baldelli told reporters. "There's a lot that we can do to get out of it and I want our guys to know that. We're very close. We're an at-bat or two away."

Nos. 12-10

Yu Darvish Matthew Grimes Jr./Atlanta Braves/Getty Images

12. San Diego Padres (24-24)

Previous Rank: 9

Last Week: 0-3 vs. COL, 2-0 @ ATL

The Padres ended their week on a high note, nearly handing the Braves their first shutout of the season in a 9-1 victory. But it's tough to ignore getting swept by the Rockies, especially when it doesn't happen at Coors Field. Tip of the cap to Yu Darvish, who picked up his 200th career win between the Japanese League and MLB on Sunday.

11. Chicago Cubs (26-22)

Previous Rank: 10

Last Week: 1-2 @ ATL, 1-3 vs. PIT

The Cubs spent last week with the light-hitting duo of Nick Madrigal and Miles Mastrobuoni manning the middle infield spots, but they are expected to have Nico Hoerner and Dansby Swanson both back in action this week. That comes at the perfect time after arguably their worst week of the season, though rookie Shōta Imanaga kept rolling on the mound. The left-hander set an MLB record for the best ERA through a player's first nine career starts with a 0.84 mark to best Fernando Valenzuela's 0.91 ERA in 1981.

10. Seattle Mariners (25-22)

Previous Rank: 12

Last Week: 2-1 vs. KC, 1-2 @ BAL

The Seattle bullpen recorded one win, three saves and four holds last week, and with that group backing a stacked starting rotation, the Mariners have as good of a pitching staff top to bottom as any team in baseball. The question mark is an offense that is hitting .228 while leading the majors in strikeouts.

Nos. 9-7

Joey Ortiz John Fisher/Getty Images

9. Milwaukee Brewers (27-19)

Previous Rank: 11

Last Week: 2-1 vs. PIT, 1-2 @ HOU

With a vastly improved offense and a bullpen that has fallen into place with Trevor Megill handling ninth-inning duties while Devin Williams is sidelined with a back injury, the Brewers look like the cream of the crop in the NL Central. Infielder Joey Ortiz is hitting .333/.391/.738 with three doubles, four home runs and seven RBI in May, and he has been arguably the best rookie position player in the NL.

8. Tampa Bay Rays (25-23)

Previous Rank: 17

Last Week: 3-1 @ BOS, 2-1 @ TOR

The Rays were this week's biggest climbers thanks to a pair of series wins on the road against division rivals, and suddenly they are right back in the thick of wild-card contention. After an extremely slow start at the plate, 2023 AL batting title winner Yandy Díaz is hitting .324/.392/.465 over 75 plate appearances in May while setting the table atop the lineup.

7. Kansas City Royals (29-19)

Previous Rank: 7

Last Week: 1-2 @ SEA, 3-0 vs. OAK

Seth Lugo for AL Cy Young? After striking out 10 over 5.2 innings of two-run ball against Oakland on Saturday, the veteran right-hander enters the week leading the AL in wins (7), ERA (1.79) and innings pitched (65.1). There are still questions offensively and in the bullpen, but with a 3.07 ERA from the starting staff that ranks fourth in the majors, this team looks like a serious threat to hang around in the playoff hunt.

Nos. 6-4

Grayson Rodriguez Mitchell Layton/Getty Images

6. Atlanta Braves (26-16)

Previous Rank: 5

Last Week: 2-1 vs. CHC, 0-2 vs. SD

The Braves avoided getting shut out for the first time since May 12, 2023, thanks to a double from Chadwick Tromp and an RBI single from Ozzie Albies in the ninth inning on Sunday night, but they still lost 9-1. The best they can do now is split a four-game series with the Padres by winning both ends of a double-header on Monday.

5. Cleveland Guardians (30-17)

Previous Rank: 8

Last Week: 2-1 @ TEX, 3-0 vs. MIN

The Guardians made a statement with a three-game sweep of the Twins over the weekend, and they now hold a 1.5-game cushion over the upstart Royals in the AL Central. The offense has scored seven or more runs four times in the club's last seven games, which is a promising sign from a team that had been lacking in consistent support for Josh Naylor and José Ramírez.

4. Baltimore Orioles (29-15)

Previous Rank: 3

Last Week: 1-1 vs. TOR, 2-1 vs. SEA

With Austin Hays and Grayson Rodriguez both activated from the injured list, the Orioles had some tough roster decisions to make, and outfielder Ryan McKenna and reliever Mike Baumann were ultimately designated for assignment. It speaks volumes to how far this organization has come that a pitcher like Baumann, who went 10-1 with a 3.76 ERA in 60 appearances out of the bullpen last year and was off to a strong start again this season, simply did not have a spot on the roster.

Nos. 3-1

Aaron Judge Mike Stobe/Getty Images

3. New York Yankees (33-15)

Previous Rank: 4

Last Week: 3-0 @ MIN, 3-0 vs. CWS

The Yankees improved to 14-3 in May with a pair of series sweeps last week, and with Aaron Judge (1.433 OPS, 9 2B, 7 HR, 14 RBI), Giancarlo Stanton (.917 OPS, 5 HR, 10 RBI) and Juan Soto (.860 OPS, 7 XBH, 12 RBI) all swinging a hot bat in May, this is the most potent the offense has looked in some time. Meanwhile, Luis Gil improved to 5-1 with a 2.39 ERA after racking up 14 strikeouts over six innings against the White Sox on Sunday, and he is in the driver's seat in the AL Rookie of the Year race right now.

2. Los Angeles Dodgers (32-17)

Previous Rank: 1

Last Week: 2-1 @ SF, 3-1 vs. CIN

The Dodgers did nothing to warrant dropping in the rankings, the Phillies are just playing a bit better right now, and those two NL juggernauts could spend the next several weeks flip-flopping in the rankings. With Jason Heyward returning from the injured list, 2023 rookie standout James Outman was optioned to the minors last week after losing his starting spot to Andy Pages.

1. Philadelphia Phillies (34-14)

Previous Rank: 2

Last Week: 2-0 @ NYM, 1-1 vs. NYM, 3-0 vs. WAS

In a lineup loaded with high-profile veterans and a rotation stacked with high-priced arms, it's Alec Bohm, Bryson Stott and Ranger Suárez who have been arguably the three best players on the Phillies roster this year. The emergence of that trio alongside all the team's established star power is a big reason why they sport the best record in baseball more than a quarter of the way into the season.

Stars of the Week

Paul Skenes Nuccio DiNuzzo/Getty Images

Hitter of the Week: Luis Matos, San Francisco Giants

Stats: 5 G, 10-for-22, 3 2B, 2 HR, 16 RBI, 3 R

After tallying 14 RBI in 76 games as a rookie last season, Luis Matos bested that total with 16 RBI in just five games last week. He went 3-for-5 with two doubles and five RBI on Friday in the series opener against the Colorado Rockies, then followed that up with another 3-for-5 performance that included a double, a home run and six RBI on Saturday. The 22-year-old was a Top 100 prospect in 2022 and could emerge as a core piece for the Giants.

Pitcher of the Week: Aaron Nola, Philadelphia Phillies

Stats: 2 GS, 2 W, SHO, 16.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 13 K

Aaron Nola earned top pitcher honors on the strength of a four-hit shutout against the New York Mets on Tuesday, and he backed that up with seven strong innings against the Washington Nationals on Sunday for his second win of the week. The shutout was the fourth of his career, and he has now completed at least seven innings in five of his 10 starts this year.

Rookie of the Week: Paul Skenes, Pittsburgh Pirates

Stats: 1 GS, W, 6.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 11 K

In the second start of his big league career, Paul Skenes struck out the first seven batters he faced and went on to toss six no-hit innings against the Cubs before he was lifted with 100 pitches. The final pitch of his start was a 100 mph fastball to send Mike Tauchman packing for his 11th punchout.

Tip of the cap to Cubs left-hander Shōta Imanaga (2 GS, 12.0 IP, 11 H, 0 ER, 4 BB, 15 K) for another terrific week on the mound, lowering his ERA to an MLB-best 0.84 through his first nine starts.
