At an introductory news conference Friday, new Phoenix Suns head coach Mike Budenholzer said he is "excited" about the current roster, but specified a key area for improvement.
"I'm excited about working with this roster and these players," Budenholzer said, per ESPN. "We have great players. And with great players come great expectations. I think we embrace that."
While Budenholzer is fond of the roster constructed of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, he recognized that getting a point guard this offseason is something the team should focus on.
"The conversations have been great and there's no doubt that we need to look at the whole roster and talk about point guard," Budenholzer said. "I'm sure it's a hot-button issue here, whether it's with the media, players or the front office. We need to think about it.
"We need to be able to play without one. We probably need to be able to have one. We need to be versatile -- play different ways."
While the Suns have plenty of star power with Durant, Booker and Beal, they didn't have a true point guard on the roster in the 2023-24 season. That was one of the major factors that led to a disappointing collapse in the playoffs as the Minnesota Timberwolves swept them in the first round.
Phoenix had the sixth-worst assist-to-turnover ratio in the regular season at 1.82— a number that could drastically improve with a point guard to run the offense through.
The Suns are just a few seasons removed from their only NBA Finals appearance this century when they lost to Budenholzer and the Milwaukee Bucks in 2021. The Phoenix roster that reached the Finals was highlighted by one of the truest point guards there is in Chris Paul.
Constructing a roster similar to the 2021 squad while implementing Durant, Booker and Beal could prove to be successful. Perhaps the Suns could try to bring back Paul, who could be a free agent if the Golden State Warriors choose not to exercise his $30 million team option for next season.
Whether it be Paul or someone else, it's clear one of the Suns' biggest priorities this offseason should be landing a point guard.
