Bronny James: Never Thought of Teaming with LeBron; Want to 'Make a Name for Myself'

Timothy Rapp

It is no secret that LeBron James would love to one day play with his son, Bronny James, in the NBA. He's literally said as much on multiple occasions.

But the younger James is primarily concerned with just reaching the NBA and creating his own legacy, as he told reporters Tuesday:

Whether Bronny even gets drafted, however, remains to be seen.

B/R's Jonathan Wasserman didn't have him listed on his latest top-50 big board or mock draft. He wasn't alone in that regard—neither The Athletic's Sam Vecenie or ESPN's Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo projected him to get selected in recent mock drafts.

The Ringer's Kevin O'Connor ranked him 69th on his own big board but did predict that the Los Angeles Lakers would take him 55th overall in his mock draft.

There is always the possibility that a team interested in signing his father this offseason—James has a player option with the Lakers he could potentially decline—could draft Bronny to sweeten the proverbial pot for LeBron.

But that wouldn't come with any sort of guarantee that James would sign and arguably would be a waste of an asset if the team didn't rate Bronny as much as other available prospects, given that second-round picks still sometimes hit and turn into players like three-time MVP Nikola Jokić.

As for who the younger James is hoping to become in the NBA, he said he models his game after guards like Jrue Holiday, Derrick White and Davion Mitchell:

Bronny didn't pop during his one year of college, averaging just 4.8 points and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 26.7 percent from three. He's shown defensive potential and the ability to be a secondary playmaker, but his perimeter shooting needs work.

At this point, he probably would be best served returning to college and fine-tuning his game. But if he remains in the draft, his focus will be on forging his own path rather than riding the coattails of his legendary father.
