Kiley McDaniels' ESPN 2024 MLB Mock Draft: Bazzana to Guardians, Condon to Reds

Adam Wells

Even though Charlie Condon is having a historic 2024 season, the Georgia standout is not currently projected to be the No. 1 pick in the MLB draft by at least one expert.

ESPN's Kiley McDaniel has the Cleveland Guardians taking Oregon State second baseman Travis Bazzana with the top choice in his "mini" mock draft, followed by Condon going No. 2 to the Cincinnati Reds.

McDaniel noted Bazzana and Florida's Jac Caglianone are the "leading options" for Cleveland right now due to the team's preference, not an indication of potential signing bonus savings since those don't get "floated until much later" in the process.

Rounding out the top five of McDaniel's mock is Caglianone to the Colorado Rockies at No. 3, followed by Wake Forest first baseman Nick Kurtz to the Oakland Athletics and Arkansas lefty Hagen Smith to the Chicago White Sox.

Condon has been the biggest star on the college circuit so far this season. He's homered in seven straight games after a three-run shot in Sunday's win over Vanderbilt.

That homer gave Condon 33 in 47 games this season. He has already tied the record for most homers by any player in a single season since the NCAA adopted the BBCOR bats in 2011.

MLB.com has Condon ranked as the top prospect in the 2024 draft class thanks to his "top-of-the-scale raw power that plays from foul pole to foul pole and his combination of bat speed, strength and leverage in his 6-foot-6 frame allows him to mishit balls yet still drive them out of the park."

If Cleveland were to pass on Condon, it's not like Bazzana or Caglianone would be bad alternatives. They are MLB.com's second- and third-ranked prospects in the class.

Bazzana's tools aren't as loud as those for Condon or Caglianone, particularly in the power department, but he's already hit more homers this season (26) than in the previous two years combined (15).

Caglianone ranks second to Condon in the home-run race with 27. He's a two-way player at Florida, though the expectation is pitching isn't a good option for him in professional baseball. The 21-year-old has a 4.39 ERA and 37 walks in 53.1 innings on the mound this season.

There's still plenty of time for all of these projections to change. The 2024 MLB draft takes place from July 14 to 16 during the All-Star break.

The Guardians won the first pick in the draft in the lottery. This is the first time Cleveland will pick No. 1 overall in the history of the draft.
