Jones: Dak Prescott Contract a 'Priority' for Cowboys; Seen as Super Bowl-Caliber QB

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has yet to receive the contract extension many predicted he would be getting this offseason, but it sounds like the team is working on it.

During an appearance on Mad Dog Radio, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said the team considers signing Prescott to a new contract to be a "priority" and he went on to add that there is a belief within the organization that Prescott can deliver a Super Bowl title to Dallas.

Jones noted that despite Prescott not yet receiving a new deal, he hasn't lost motivation this offseason.

"He does everything the right way. He's certainly the leader of this football team," Jones said. "He keeps everybody motivated in the offseason. He's got everybody working out and doing all the things that it takes to put in the work to give yourself every opportunity to win a championship."

The 2024 season is the final year remaining on Prescott's contract. He is set to count for a $55.4 million cap hit, so it would make sense for the Cowboys to work out an extension that would provide the team with more financial flexibility.

However, it doesn't sound like much progress has been made in negotiations between Dallas and Prescott. On Sunday's episode of SportsCenter, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported that contract discussions between the two sides "have been described to me as passive or even nonexistent." Fowler added that there's a chance that the Cowboys will allow him to enter the year without a new deal and "then figure it out later."

Prescott is coming off a strong 2023 campaign in which he led the NFL with 36 passing touchdowns and earned his third career Pro Bowl selection. He certainly deserves to be among the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league, but the Cowboys also face the daunting tasks of signing star receiver CeeDee Lamb and edge rusher Micah Parsons to extensions in addition to Prescott.

It won't be easy, but keeping the band together is imperative for Dallas' Super Bowl hopes.
