MLB, Nike Announce Uniform Adjustments for 2025 Season Including Enlarged Lettering

MLB and Nike announced Friday that they will include larger name lettering and options for "individual pant customization" on player uniforms for the 2025 season.

In addition, Nike is "working on" matching shades of grey used on pants and jerseys, and preventing visible sweat stains from showing through jerseys, MLB said.

The Friday announcement followed "conversations with players, clubs, and their equipment managers," MLB said.

The league debuted new uniforms for the 2024 season that were designed by Nike and produced by Fanatics. Many players criticized aspects of the uniforms, including the transparency of the pants.

The changes follow a video meeting held between MLB and Nike officials last Wednesday, during which MLB representatives told Nike that uniform changes were needed, according to the Wall Street Journal's Lindsey Adler and Andrew Beaton,

MLB has been partnering with Nike and Fanatics since 2019, but the 2024 season marked the rollout of new Nike Vapor Premier uniforms.

These uniforms, which debuted at the 2023 MLB All-Star Game, are made out of at least 90 percent recycled polyester. They are designed to be more stretchable and dry more quickly, according to MLB.

Concerns about the new uniforms first arose at spring training, when players' photos showed a clear outline of the jersey tucked into the pants.

MLB responded in a statement that the "material and thickness" of the pant fabric had not changed since last season, and that only the design had changed, per Adler.

According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, one of the upcoming changes will include a return to the pants zipper used on the previous iteration of the uniforms.

MLB did concede that the jersey fabric had changed. That also raised concerns in spring training when players began to notice visible sweat stains:

The changes will also address a decrease in the lettering size of the names on the back of the jerseys. The Kansas City Royals already lobbied MLB to allow larger letters on their 2024 jerseys, according to Paul Lukas of Uni Watch.

The MLB Players' Association distributed a memo to players about the upcoming changes last Sunday, according to Passan. In the memo, the MLBPA blamed Nike for the changes while praising Fanatics for cooperating with the union.

MLB will now hope addressing player concerns will help ease the MLBPA's frustration with Nike, which is signed on to serve as the league's official brand partner through the 2029 season.
