Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes Names Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, More as NFL QB Inspirations

Andrew Peters

Patrick Mahomes is well on his way to being among the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history, and the Kansas City Chiefs star broke down some of his inspirations on the IMPAULSIVE podcast on Thursday.

Mahomes listed Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Matthew Stafford among others as his biggest quarterback inspirations.

"I looked at Tom [Brady] and his pocket movement, because even though he's not the fastest guy, he moves around the pocket and gets himself in a place to throw," Mahomes said. "I watched Aaron [Rodgers] a lot and I watched Matthew Stafford a lot growing up. And I was a big Cowboys fan—sorry—as I grew up, so I watched Tony Romo a ton too. So those guys can move around, sling the football, but there's a lot of great quarterbacks and I'm just trying to get on that list as well."

While Mahomes has taken inspiration from all of those quarterbacks, he's created his own unique playstyle that incorporates many attributes from the group. He combines the arm strength of all four quarterbacks with great pocket awareness and scrambling ability, making him one of the hardest quarterbacks to play against.

Mahomes, like his quarterback inspirations, has managed to rack up a long list of accolades, including a pair of MVPs, three Super Bowls and three Super Bowl MVPs.

Next season, he'll look to lead the Chiefs to an unprecedented third Super Bowl in a row. The 28-year-old had another outstanding season in 2023, racking up 4,183 passing yards and 27 touchdowns, and he seems poised for another big year in 2024.

If he can win his fourth Super Bowl, there will be no denying Mahomes is on the short list of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.
