Knicks' Most Realistic Trade Targets in 2024 Offseason

Zach Buckley

The New York Knicks used the 2023-24 NBA season to solidify themselves as full-fledged contenders.

Now, they'll use this playoff run to find out what—if anything—is still missing from their championship puzzle. Because as loaded as this roster is, the asset collection remains strong enough to pursue a difference-maker on the trade market.

If New York senses a need for another high-end addition, the following three impact players stand out as obvious—and potentially obtainable—offseason targets.

If something trips up the Knicks this postseason, the lack of a true No. 2 scorer feels like it will be that something. Now, would a healthy Julius Randle change that? Perhaps, but then again his two playoff track record is spotty at best, so maybe he'd struggle to fill that void.

Kevin Durant wouldn't. Even at 35 years old, he basically remains a walking source of 30-plus points on impressive efficiency. Forcing opponents to have to worry about him and Jalen Brunson could be the key to routinely shredding their defenses.

Durant isn't necessarily available at the moment, but it sure feels like he could be soon. The Suns were one of this season's biggest disappointments, and he was less than thrilled with his offensive role. If that moves him to the trade market, the Knicks would be a "prime candidate" to pursue him, a Western Conference executive told Heavy.com's Sean Deveney.

Durant has been linked to the franchise before, and he'd be an easy fit regardless who was left over after the trade to land him.

Paul George, Los Angeles Clippers (Sign-and-Trade)

All win-now shoppers should have some level of interest in Paul George, who has yet to sign an extension in L.A. While the Knicks don't have the wiggle room to sign him in free agency, they could still bring him to the Big Apple by way of a sign-and-trade.

He'd be a great get in Gotham, largely because he'd be a great get anywhere.

Modern teams are infatuated with big-wing defenders, and he remains one of the best in the business. That he also doubles as an uber-efficient scorer and more-than-capable secondary creator just underscores the validity of his two-way stardom.

He could team up with Brunson to lead the offense and with a re-signed OG Anunoby to lead the defense. George's impact would be immense on both ends.

Donovan Mitchell, Cleveland Cavaliers

It wouldn't be worthwhile Knicks trade speculation without a mention of Donovan Mitchell, right?

The New York native has been a logical target of this team for years, and things could heat up on that front in a hurry. If he doesn't extend his contract, he can enter free agency in 2025, putting the Cavaliers at significant risk of losing him for nothing. They may have no choice to proactively trade him for assets instead, and if he makes it known he wants to join the Knicks, they may might not have to pay a fortune.

Anything reasonable for the 27-year-old would be worth it, though.

A Brunson-Mitchell backcourt sounds like a nightmare for opposing coaches, and the Knicks would have enough stoppers around them to quell concerns about their defensive fit together.
