Rumors linking Phoenix Suns star Devin Booker to the New York Knicks are "unequivocally false," according to Gerald Bourguet of PHNX Sports.
Bourguet reported the Knicks have had some level of interest since Leon Rose took over as team president in 2020. Rose was a representative for the four-time All-Star while working for the talent agency CAA.
Booker's future in Phoenix has become the subject of debate following the team's first-round sweep at the hands of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Suns' grand superteam experiment is already crumbling. Kevin Durant isn't getting any younger, Bradley Beal was miscast as the third star on this roster, and the front office has limited means with which to make improvements on the fly.
There may come a time when Booker, who's signed through 2027-28, looks around and starts to seriously question whether he wants to stay.
But that time isn't now. Bourguet reported the 27-year-old "is steadfast in his desire to get over the hump in Phoenix."
That quite a different picture than the one painted by ESPN's Stephen A. Smith on Monday. He reported on First Take that Booker "wants to be in New York."
The Knicks exhausted some of their trade assets before the 2024 trade deadline, yet they still have a lot of draft picks they can package together for a major star. In theory, they could put together an attractive offer for the Suns in the event Phoenix wanted to do a full teardown and recoup the picks it lost when it acquired Durant and Beal.
Nothing indicates president of basketball operations James Jones is prepared to take such a drastic step, and Bourguet's report left no doubt about Booker's mindset.
The signs point toward the Suns running it back for the most part in 2024-25.
Their next major inflection point may come during the 2025 offseason since that's when Durant will be entering the final year of his contract. Jones might be left with two options: re-signing the 14-time All-Star or flipping him to the highest bidder before he can leave as a free agent.
What Phoenix ultimately decides with Durant could force Booker to reconsider his status.
