Additional details emerged from the ongoing investigation into the gambling activities of Ippei Mizuhara, who is the former interpreter for Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani.

Tisha Thompson of ESPN reported on the situation Tuesday and noted Mizuhara funneled money allegedly stolen from Ohtani's bank account through casinos in California and Las Vegas to pay his bookie.

A series of $500,000 payments were funneled to the casinos, where they were then deposited in gambling accounts, converted to chips and eventually cashed out to pay Mathew Bowyer, who took Mizuhara's bets.

According to Thompson, Bowyer lost $7.9 million at Resorts World in Las Vegas over the course of a little more than a year. Resorts World is one of the places where the money was directed as part of the scheme.

However, the bookie's home was raided by federal agents in October. He is no longer allowed to enter casinos in the United States because he is known as a bookmaker.

Holly Yan and Cindy Von Quednow of CNN reported on the situation earlier this month and noted Mizuhara turned himself into authorities after allegedly stealing $16 million from Ohtani. He was ordered to undergo gambling addiction treatment and was released on $25,000 bond.

Ohtani was also declared a victim in the ongoing case.

Mizuhara used the money to help fund approximately 19,000 wagers, which left him with a net balance of more than negative $40 million. He faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted on the federal charge of bank fraud.

This all came to light shortly after Ohtani signed a 10-year deal with the Dodgers this past offseason. He has appeared in 31 games for his new team and is slashing .341/.406/.635 with seven home runs, 19 RBI and five stolen bases.

Ohtani is a two-way star but has been unable to pitch this season as he recovers from elbow surgery.

Earlier this month, Ohtani told reporters: "The investigation is currently still going on, so I can't really say much about that. But it made me really realize how supportive the teammates, the organization, the staff have been towards me. It's just allowed me to really reflect on how grateful I am to be surrounded by them."
