Pelicans' Griffin Hints at Trades, Says Team Will Show 'Urgency' amid NBA Rumors

The New Orleans Pelicans' season came to an end via a first-round sweep by the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday, but the team might look quite different for the 2024-25 season.

At least that's what executive vice president of basketball operations David Griffin hinted at Tuesday.

"In the past, we've always erred on the side of continuity, and our takeaway has always been let's see this group healthy," he told reporters. "I think we've seen it enough. I think we had some really good opportunity to see Zion play a career-high in games. I think we saw it for segments of time well enough to understand that we've got a lot of work to do.

"Because it's a historically good Western Conference, there are teams that didn't make the playoffs that are going to get radically better this offseason. We need to do the same. I think you'll see a real sense of urgency from all of us to do that."

A renewed sense of urgency isn't surprising from the Pelicans' perspective.

They lost in the first round of the playoffs in two of the last three years and need to improve the roster in some capacity to compete with the best teams in the Western Conference. Health concerns have been an issue in the past with Zion Williamson since he missed the 2021-22 season and played just 29 games in 2022-23, but he was fairly healthy this season.

The Duke product appeared in 70 games during the regular season, although he missed the series against the Thunder because of a hamstring injury he suffered during the play-in tournament.

Then there is Brandon Ingram, who will be entering the final season of his contract. While he was expected to carry the team without Williamson, he failed to reach the 20-point mark in any of the four losses against the Thunder and went 2-of-14 from the field in the closeout game.

With Ingram under contract for just one more season and remaining question marks about Williamson's overall health even though he is a star when he is on the floor, it's not surprising the Pelicans would make some moves.

They need to capitalize on this window with Williamson signed through the 2027-28 campaign, and the team currently in place is not good enough to compete with the best in the Western Conference.

Throw in the possibility that the Memphis Grizzlies could make a jump with a healthy Ja Morant or the San Antonio Spurs could be in playoff position in the coming years with Victor Wembanyama, and there aren't many spots left in the Western Conference playoff picture.

So it's either improve or potentially miss the postseason for New Orleans.
