The 2024 MLB All-Star Game is still more than two months away, but it's never too early to start looking ahead to the Midsummer Classic.
One of the liveliest debates each season centers around the biggest snubs when All-Star Game rosters are selected, so why not start that debate now?
Each month during the 2024 season leading up to the All-Star roster announcements, we'll be giving our best guess at which 64 players will get the call to play in the annual showcase of baseball's top talent.
The first version of this article was published on April 3, and those picks were based largely on expectations and future projection. However, going forward, the sole determining factor will be 2024 performance.
Using the 32-player roster format and sticking to the rule of selecting one player from each of the 30 teams, we have assembled our way-too-early 2024 American League and National League All-Star teams.
For consistency, each roster was made up of 20 position players and 12 pitchers.
Let the debate begin!
AL Starting Lineup
AL Starting Lineup
1. 2B José Altuve, HOU
2. SS Gunnar Henderson, BAL
3. RF Juan Soto, NYY
4. C Salvador Pérez, KC
5. CF Kyle Tucker, HOU
6. LF Tyler O'Neill, BOS
7. 1B Josh Naylor, CLE
8. DH Justin Turner, TOR
9. 3B Jordan Westburg, BAL
SP Tarik Skubal, DET
Notes
-There is a compelling debate between Gunnar Henderson (174 OPS+, 10 HR, 6 SB, 2.0 WAR) and Bobby Witt Jr. (158 OPS+, 17 XBH, 9 SB, 2.1 WAR) for the starting shortstop spot in the American League, and those two could battle it out for top honors for years to come.
-Somewhat overshadowed by some of the other young hitters on the Orioles roster, Jordan Westburg is a former Top 100 prospect in his own right, and he is hitting .301/.351/.515 for a 152 OPS+ with 11 extra-base hits in 112 plate appearances.

Notes
-Catcher Ryan Jeffers (MIN) and third baseman Isaac Paredes (TB) are the lone representatives for their respective teams, but both have All-Star-caliber numbers aside from fulfilling roster requirements. Cal Raleigh, Adley Rutschman and Connor Wong are also candidates for a backup catcher nod.
-Outfielder Steven Kwan remains one of the more underrated players in baseball, and he is currently in the driver's seat in the AL batting title race with a .360/.403/.512 line and 166 OPS+ in 134 plate appearances.

Notes
-Starters Tyler Anderson (LAA), Erick Fedde (CWS) and Logan Gilbert (SEA) along with reliever Mason Miller (OAK) are all on the AL roster as the lone representatives for their respective teams. In his return from the KBO, Fedde has a 2.60 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 39 strikeouts in 34.2 innings on a two-year, $15 million deal.
-Kutter Crawford (7 GS, 1.56 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 40 K, 40.1 IP) and Tanner Houck (6 GS, 1.60 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, 41 K, 39.1 IP) have led the way for a Boston Red Sox staff that ranks first in the majors with a 2.03 ERA from the starting rotation.
3 Toughest AL Omissions
OF/DH Mark Canha, Detroit Tigers
Canha is hitting .267/.393/.495 for a 153 OPS+ with eight doubles, five home runs and 16 RBI in 122 plate appearances while splitting his time between first base, the outfield corners and designated hitter. With outfielder Riley Greene and left-hander Tarik Skubal on the projected roster from the Tigers, he was victim of a roster crunch.
SP Seth Lugo, Kansas City Royals
Lugo was by far the toughest omission from the AL pitching staff, going 5-1 with a 1.60 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 31 strikeouts in an AL-leading 45 innings. The 34-year-old made a successful transition to the rotation with the Padres last season and now looks like a steal pitching on a three-year, $45 million deal.
IF Josh Smith, Texas Rangers
With 2023 All-Star Game starter Josh Jung sidelined following wrist surgery, Smith has taken over as the Rangers starting third baseman. The 26-year-old is hitting .318/.420/.494 for a 161 OPS+ with 1.7 WAR in 30 games. He was a .191/.306/.287 career hitter in 485 plate appearances entering the year.

5. RF Teoscar Hernandez, LAD
6. 3B Alec Bohm, PHI
7. C William Contreras, MIL
8. CF Brandon Marsh, PHI
9. LF Jurickson Profar, SD
SP Ranger Suárez, PHI
Notes
-With Ronald Acuña Jr., Corbin Carroll, Brandon Nimmo, Nick Castellanos and others off to slow starts, the NL outfield picture is cloudy at best. Former top prospect Jurickson Profar has been the biggest surprise of the bunch, hitting .342/.431/.523 for a 179 OPS+ after signing a one-year, $1 million deal to rejoin the Padres during the offseason.
-Marcell Ozuna (187 OPS+, 15 XBH, 9 HR, 32 RBI) vs. Shohei Ohtani (185 OPS+, 22 XBH, 7 HR, 19 RBI) for the starting designated hitter spot is a compelling debate, though both players are easy choices for a spot on the NL roster.

SS Elly De La Cruz, CIN

OF Brenton Doyle, COL
OF Michael Harris II, ATL
OF Fernando Tatis Jr., SD

Notes
-CJ Abrams (WAS) and Elly De La Cruz (CIN) were the only picks from their teams, and both are having breakout seasons at the plate as they join the ranks of the game's elite shortstops. Outfielder Bryan De La Cruz (MIA) has a 106 OPS+ with eight doubles, five home runs and 16 RBI, making him the best candidate on a bad Marlins team.
-It's tough to justify two All-Star selections for a Rockies team off to a 7-23 start through their first 30 games, but Ryan McMahon (149 OPS+, 12 XBH, 4 HR, 18 RBI) and Brenton Doyle (129 OPS+, .311/.360/.481, 11 XBH) have both put up All-Star-worthy numbers.

RP Ryan Helsley, STL
RP Robert Suárez, SD
Notes
-There was not much flexibility on the NL pitching staff with Jordan Hicks (SF), Shōta Imanaga (CHC), Jared Jones (PIT), Luis Severino (NYM) and Ryan Helsley (STL) all occupying a roster spot as their team's only All-Star selections.
-The decision to let Josh Hader depart in free agency looks like a smart one for the San Diego Padres, with Robert Suárez making a seamless transition into the closer's role. The 33-year-old has converted all 10 of his save chances with a 0.66 ERA and 0.81 WHIP in 13 appearances.
3 Toughest NL Omissions
SS Willy Adames, Milwaukee Brewers and SS Trea Turner, Philadelphia Phillies
With Elly De La Cruz and CJ Abrams both on the projected NL roster as the only picks for their teams and Mookie Betts penciled into the starting lineup, there is a major roster crunch at shortstop in the National League. Adames (150 OPS+, 13 XBH, 21 RBI, 1.6 WAR) and Turner (141 OPS+, 12 XBH, 9 SB, 1.5 WAR) both have All-Star worthy numbers.
1B/OF Connor Joe, Pittsburgh Pirates
Joe is hitting .283/.365/.467 for a 140 OPS+ with 11 extra-base hits in 104 plate appearances in a super-utility role for the Pirates splitting his time between first base and the outfielder corners. The 31-year-old has played his way into a large role and his versatility further adds to his value.
SP Spencer Turnbull, Philadelphia Phillies
With Ranger Suárez and Zack Wheeler already on the NL roster, Turnbull ended up on the outside looking in for a spot on the NL roster, but he is absolutely deserving. The 31-year-old signed a one-year, $2 million deal during the offseason to serve as rotation depth, and he has a 1.67 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 36 strikeouts in 32.1 innings over six starts.
