Buying or Selling Braves' Biggest Breakout Players in 2024 Season

Joel Reuter

The Atlanta Braves have been baseball's best team through the first month of the 2024 season, and with a stacked roster filled with established stars the opportunities for breakout players have been few and far between.

That said, Reynaldo López is off to a fantastic start in his return to a starting role after pitching primarily out of the bullpen the last two seasons, while backup catcher Chadwick Tromp and lefty reliever Dylan Lee have also made some nice early contributions.

But are those strong starts for real?

Ahead, we have given our take on whether to buy or sell those early performances based on track records and advanced metrics.

Left-hander Dylan Lee had a nice rookie season for the Atlanta Braves in 2022, posting a 2.13 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in 46 appearances, but he was more or less a non-factor last season.

The 29-year-old had a 4.18 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in 24 appearances last season, and his general ineffectiveness along with an injury to Tyler Matzek left the Braves without a reliable second southpaw alongside A.J. Minter in the 2023 bullpen.

With Matzek back healthy and Aaron Bummer acquired from the Chicago White Sox, the Braves entered the season with an abundance of left-handed options in the bullpen, but it's Lee who has been the early standout.

He has a 1.46 ERA over seven appearances, though it has come with a 1.22 WHIP and almost as many walks (7) as strikeouts (9). With minor league options remaining, it wouldn't be surprising to see him shuttled back to Triple-A a few times this year.

The Braves signed Reynaldo López to a three-year, $30 million deal during the offseason with the intention of converting him back into a starting role after he made just one start and 128 relief appearances in 2022 and 2023.

He looked like a star on the rise for the Chicago White Sox in 2018 when he posted a 3.91 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 151 strikeouts in 188.2 innings during his age-24 season, but he failed to build off that early success and eventually found himself relegated to the bullpen.

The 30-year-old had a 3.27 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 83 strikeouts in 66 innings last season while tallying six saves and 22 holds in 68 appearances with the White Sox, Angels and Guardians.

In five starts in the Atlanta rotation, he has a 1.50 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and a 31-to-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 30 innings, and his ability to miss bats while also doing a better job limiting walks than he did early in his career makes his breakout look like the real deal.

With Sean Murphy still nursing an oblique strain he suffered on Opening Day, third-string catcher Chadwick Tromp has served as the backup to veteran Travis d'Arnaud over the first month of the season.

The 29-year-old went 2-for-16 with one RBI and seven strikeouts in limited big league action last season, and he appeared in 40 total games over the past four years, hitting .222 with a 70 OPS+ in 102 plate appearances.

His numbers don't exactly jump off the page, but he has gone 7-for-26 with three doubles and six RBI in 10 games of action, and that includes a terrific 3-for-7 showing with runners in scoring position.

He will likely head back to Triple-A once Murphy returns, but not many teams can say they have a quality third catching option waiting in the wings, so he provides valuable depth to the organization.
