NBA Rumors: Pelicans, Jazz Expected to Aggressively Pursue Trades in 2024 Offseason

Amid the shift that happened in the Western Conference this season with multiple new teams finishing at the top of the standings, two clubs looking to make their mark could be big factors in the trade market over the summer.

Per The Ringer's Kevin O'Connor, the New Orleans Pelicans and Utah Jazz are expected "to be aggressive in pursuing trades this summer with their mountains of picks."

Trying to keep up in the Western Conference right for a team that's not currently in the top tier is a difficult test.

The Oklahoma City Thunder had the best record in the conference during the regular season with a roster. They accomplished that feat with the second-youngest roster in the league when the season started.

Oklahoma City could also have up to 16 first-round draft picks between 2024 and '30 to package in potential trades if it wants to add more talent around Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams.

The Denver Nuggets will remain a juggernaut for at least one more season with Nikola Jokić, Jamal Murray, Michael Porter Jr. and Aaron Gordon are all under contract together.

The Minnesota Timberwolves may not want to keep their expensive trio of Anthony Edwards, Rudy Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns together for luxury-tax purposes, but who knows what direction they might go if they continue to have success in this postseason.

Along with that established trio of teams, the San Antonio Spurs, Houston Rockets and Memphis Grizzlies figure to improve next season. The Spurs and Grizzlies, in particular, will almost certainly be better with their young superstars on the court.

The Pelicans never got to see what might have happened in this postseason if they were at full strength. Zion Williamson missed the first round against the Thunder due to the hamstring injury he suffered in the fourth quarter of the play-in tournament loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

New Orleans has two first-round picks this year, along with up to nine more from 2025 to '30. Jonas Valančiūnas, Cody Zeller and Naji Marshall are the only unrestricted free agents the Pelicans have to worry about this offseason.

The Jazz have been seemingly been biding their time just waiting to cash in on all of those draft assets they received for trading Gobert and Donovan Mitchell. They have up to 15 first-round picks over the next six years to use in trade offers.

Lauri Markkanen is only owed $18 million next season in the final year of his contract. ESPN's Bobby Marks noted the Jazz are the only team entering the offseason with multiple 2024 first-round picks and at least $40 million in cap space this summer.
