Lakers Rumors: Bronny James Eyed for LeBron in 2024 NBA Draft to 'Fulfill His Dream'

The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly open to the possibility of selecting Bronny James in the 2024 NBA draft so he can play alongside his father—Lakers superstar LeBron James.

According to Shams Charania, Jovan Buha and Sam Amick of The Athletic, the Lakers would consider the option of helping LeBron "fulfill his dream" by being teammates with his son.

Bronny committed to USC last year as one of the most highly touted recruits in the nation, but after going into cardiac arrest while working out last summer, he missed the first eight games of his freshman season.

The younger James was on a minutes restriction for much of the 2023-24 campaign and had a disappointing year statistically, but he still decided to declare for the 2024 NBA draft, while also leaving open the option of returning to college by entering the transfer portal.

In his only collegiate season to date, Bronny averaged just 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game, while shooting only 36.6 percent from the field and 26.7 percent from beyond the arc.

He did not come close to playing up to his potential last season, but Bronny was considered a plus defender, playmaker and shooter coming out of high school, which seemingly gave him a strong chance to make it to the NBA one day.

As of right now, it is unclear if the Lakers will have a first-round pick in the 2024 NBA draft. As a result of the Anthony Davis trade, the New Orleans Pelicans have the choice to take L.A.'s first-round selection in either 2024 or 2025.

If the Lakers do get to keep their first-rounder, taking Bronny there may be a possibility, although it would likely be considered a huge reach given his production last season, or lack thereof.

The Lakers own the Los Angeles Clippers' second-round pick, which is shaping up to be a fairly late selection, and it could be where they strike on Bronny should he decide to remain in the draft.

In recent years, as Bronny established himself as one of the top recruits in the nation, LeBron said publicly on numerous occasions that he wanted to play alongside him in the NBA one day.

In 2022, James said on X that being Bronny's teammate in the NBA was his "plan," and he reiterated his desire last year, telling ESPN's Ramona Shelburne he was "serious" about making it happen.

It is possible another team could attempt to swoop in and draft Bronny in an effort to lure in LeBron, but since Bronny's draft stock likely took a significant hit last season, the Lakers could be the only team in on him.

While the Lakers would likely face some criticism upon selecting Bronny due to the belief that it would be a "nepotism hire" of sorts, the latter portion of the second round is always a crapshoot regardless.

Also, playing alongside his father and one of the greatest players in NBA history would perhaps be the best possible situation for Bronny in terms of developing and reaching his potential.
