Caitlin Clark knows that there will be a spotlight on herself and the Indiana Fever this WNBA season.
The 2024 WNBA Draft's No. 1 pick is gearing up for her debut season in the league. During her latest press conference, she spoke about the high expectations that will be present in the 2024 season and how she and her team is ready for it.
"No matter what happens there's going to be expectations and pressure on my shoulders and pressure on this team to be really good," Clark told reporters. "That's how you want it. We wouldn't want anything else. We want people showing up to our games, people expecting us to win a lot of basketball games this year and I'm expecting myself to play really well. I don't think it's anything that's ever been different for me."
Clark is used to pressure and expectations by now. She just helped steer her Iowa Hawkeyes to two consecutive national championship appearances and finished her collegiate career with a season in which she averaged 31.6 points, 8.9 assists and 7.4 rebounds and was named AP Player of the Year for the second time.
She joins a Fever team that is not used to this level of success. Indiana has not reached the playoffs since 2016, has only recorded eight winning seasons in 25 years and won just 13 games during the 2023 season. Clark's insertion into the lineup should help but it will definitely be a journey for the team to become a true contender.
Clark will make her WNBA regular season debut May 14 when the Fever face the Connecticut Sun. She will play her first home game just two days later, when Indiana hosts the New York Liberty.
