Patriots Fans Hype Joe Milton as Drake Maye's Backup After Surprise NFL Draft Pick

Drake Maye isn't the only rookie quarterback heading to Foxborough in 2024.

Two days after selecting Maye with the No. 3 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots utilized a sixth-round pick to take Tennessee quarterback Joe Milton III.

The pick used to select Milton was ironically the one the Patriots received from the Mac Jones trade in March. Jones was the Patriots first-round pick in 2021 and went 18-24 with one Pro Bowl selection and one playoff appearance with the franchise.

The pick also could signal the end of quarterback Bailey Zappe's time with the Patriots after two seasons. He compiled a 4-4 record with the team after being taken in the fourth round in the 2022 Draft.

Fans took to social media to express shock at the doubling down on quarterbacks but also credit the Patriots with taking a chance on a talented player like Milton:

Milton threw for 2,813 yards and 20 touchdowns with five interceptions in 2023, leading Tennessee to an 8-4 record. He was rated as the No. 10 quarterback and the No. 244 overall quarterback by Bleacher Report's NFL Scouting Department.

He joins Maye, Zappe, Jacoby Brissett and Nathan Rourke on the Patriots depth chart. That room will certainly be trimmed down by the time the 2024 season begins, and Milton and Maye could potentially be a tandem for the next several years.

New England went 4-13 in 2023 and missed the postseason for the third time in the last four seasons.
