Bears' Caleb Williams Told Draft Pick Tory Taylor 'You're Not Going to Punt Too Much'

After the Chicago Bears selected him with the No. 122 overall pick in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL draft, Iowa punter Tory Taylor shared a humorous message he received from new Bears quarterback Caleb Williams.

According to Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic, Taylor said the No. 1 overall pick out of USC texted him: "Hey, you're not going to punt too much here."

The Bears added two explosive pieces to an improving offense in the first round of the draft, taking their franchise quarterback in Williams with the first pick and then nabbing Washington wide receiver Rome Odunze at ninth overall.

Taylor is a 26-year-old from Australia, and he is coming off one of the best seasons by a punter in college football history.

He averaged 48.2 yards per punt on 93 attempts, and his 4,479 total punt yards set a new single-season NCAA record.

As a result, Taylor was named a unanimous All-American, and he won the Ray Guy Award as the most outstanding punter in the nation.

Taylor is a legitimate weapon as a punter in terms of flipping field position, but to Williams' point, the Bears are undoubtedly hopeful that they will use him far more sparingly than the Hawkeyes did.

The Bears ranked only 18th in scoring last season, but it represented an improvement from 2022 when they finished 23rd in that category.

Wide receiver D.J. Moore and tight end Cole Kmet are returning from last year's team, plus the Bears signed electric running back D'Andre Swift in free agency and acquired six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Keenan Allen in a trade with the Los Angeles Chargers.

The addition of Odunze arguably gives the Bears the best wideout trio in the league, and Williams gives them a dual-threat quarterback with a sky-high ceiling to replace Justin Fields.

Williams won the Heisman Trophy two seasons ago, and he instantly comes into an ideal situation in Chicago with a stacked group of skill-position players around him.

If Williams hits the ground running, the Bears have a chance to boast one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL, and Taylor will spend a lot of time on the sidelines as a result.
