NFL Rumors: Jets 'Insisted' on Keeping Mr. Irrelevant Draft Pick in Zach Wilson Trade

The New York Jets reportedly had no interest in including the final pick in the 2024 NFL draft in the trade that sent quarterback Zach Wilson to the Denver Broncos this week.

Speaking Saturday on SportsCenter's draft coverage, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter said the Jets "insisted" on keeping the 257th and final pick in the seventh round of the draft.

That is also known as the "Mr. Irrelevant" pick. Since 1976, the final pick in the NFL draft has been heralded as "Mr. Irrelevant" and celebrated with "Irrelevant Week" in Newport Beach, California.

Ultimately, the Jets traded Wilson and the No. 256 overall pick to the Broncos for the No. 203 overall pick in the sixth round.

As of earlier this week, the Jets owned both the Nos. 256 and 257 overall picks in the draft. Those are the final two selections with both being compensatory picks.

Schefter's report suggests that the Jets were willing to give the Broncos the slightly better pick of the two in the Wilson trade so that they could keep the final selection.

That means the Broncos could technically take the Jets' desired pick one slot ahead of them, although it is unlikely given the sheer amount of options that will be available to both teams.

Talk of Mr. Irrelevant is a far cry from where Wilson was positioned when he entered the league in 2021 as the No. 2 overall pick.

After a standout collegiate career at BYU, the Jets took Wilson with the second pick in the 2021 NFL draft in hopes of him becoming their franchise quarterback and getting them back to the playoffs for the first time since 2010.

Wilson's tenure in New York went nowhere near as well as the Jets had hoped, as he posted a 12-21 record as a starter in three seasons while completing 57.0 percent of his passes for 6,293 yards, 23 touchdowns and 25 interceptions.

The Jets acquired future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers in a trade with the Green Bay Packers last offseason, but he tore his Achilles on the Jets' first offensive series of the season.

That pressed Wilson back into action, but he went just 4-7 in 11 starts and lost the starting job late in the season.

Despite his struggles, Wilson figures to have the opportunity to compete for the Broncos' starting job this coming season along with Jarrett Stidham and 2024 No. 12 overall draft pick Bo Nix.
