MLB Power Rankings: Where All 30 Teams Stand After 1 Month

Joel Reuter

With one month of the 2024 MLB season complete, there is still no clearly defined line between contenders and non-contenders outside of a few teams at the top and bottom of the leaguewide landscape.

To that point, there were 19 teams sitting between 13 and 17 wins on the year entering play on Monday, and that large cluster of clubs made recent performance an even bigger factor in the latest version of our weekly power rankings.

The red-hot Seattle Mariners were the biggest risers this week, while the upstart Kansas City Royals and Detroit Tigers continue to be two of the biggest early surprises. On the opposite end of things, the Houston Astros have been by far the biggest disappointment, while the Tampa Bay Rays have also struggled of late.

There will be plenty more shuffling in the coming weeks, so if your favorite team isn't ranked as high as you'd like, all they need to do is keep winning and a climb up the rankings is inevitable.

For now, here's where all 30 teams stand after one month of action.

Nos. 30-28

30. Miami Marlins (6-23)

Previous Rank: 29

Last Week: 0-3 @ ATL, 0-3 vs. WAS

Through their first 29 games, the Marlins are on pace for 128 losses. They have an NL-worst .614 OPS offensively, a 5.06 ERA from the starting rotation and eight blown saves in 12 chances by the bullpen. They carry a six-game losing streak into a week when they will face the Rockies and Athletics.

29. Chicago White Sox (6-22)

Previous Rank: 30

Last Week: 0-4 @ MIN, 3-0 vs. TB

Andrew Benintendi (8-for-22, 2B, 2 HR, 10 RBI) and Eloy Jimenez (10-for-28, 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI) led the way last week for the White Sox offensively, and they doubled their season win total with a weekend series sweep of the Rays. Right-hander Erick Fedde allowed just three earned runs with 20 strikeouts in 14.1 innings over his last two starts.

28. Colorado Rockies (7-21)

Previous Rank: 28

Last Week: 2-2 vs. SD, 0-2 vs. HOU at Mexico City

After a weekend in Mexico City, the Rockies will hit the road again this week. They've gone 2-13 with a minus-54 run differential away from Coors Field in the early going this season. Center fielder Brenton Doyle is hitting .323/.368/.505 with 11 extra-base hits and four steals amid a potential offensive breakout.

Nos. 27-25

Jo Adell Megan Briggs/Getty Images

27. Los Angeles Angels (10-18)

Previous Rank: 24

Last Week: 1-2 vs. BAL, 0-3 vs. MIN

The Angels dropped to 1-9 in their last 10 games following Sunday's loss to the Twins, and it's quickly shaping up to be another lost season for Mike Trout in his pursuit of a long-awaited postseason appearance. Outfielder Jo Adell went 8-for-20 with two doubles and two home runs last week as he tries to stake claim to a regular role in right field.

26. Houston Astros (9-19)

Previous Rank: 26

Last Week: 0-3 @ CHC, 2-0 @ COL (at Mexico City)

The Astros fell to 7-19 following Thursday's loss to the Cubs, which was their worst start through 26 games since 1969 when they went 6-20 to begin the year. Left-hander Framber Valdez returned to action over the weekend, but Cristian Javier switched places with him on the injured list with a neck issue. Getting the pitching staff healthy is the key to righting the ship.

25. Oakland Athletics (12-17)

Previous Rank: 27

Last Week: 2-2 @ NYY, 2-1 @ BAL

The Athletics did not reach 12 wins until their 57th game last season, so they are already way ahead of their 2023 pace. They are likely still at least a few years away from making a move up the standings, but this team has already been far more competitive than a year ago. Closer Mason Miller is now 7-for-7 on save opportunities with a 1.46 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 18.2 K/9 in 10 appearances.

Nos. 24-22

Kevin Gausman Dustin Satloff/Getty Images

24. Tampa Bay Rays (13-16)

Previous Rank: 18

Last Week: 1-2 vs. DET, 0-3 @ CWS

With three straight series losses capped off by a three-game sweep at the hands of the last-place White Sox, the Rays have reached a low point early in the season. Their long-running success cobbling together a bullpen has been missing this year as they have a 5.29 ERA and eight blown saves in 16 chances.

23. San Diego Padres (14-17)

Previous Rank: 19

Last Week: 2-2 @ COL, 0-3 vs. PHI

Even after trading away Juan Soto and with several question marks in the lineup entering the year, the Padres rank ninth in the majors with a .724 OPS and are averaging 4.81 runs per game. If they can shore up the middle relief corps and get Yu Darvish back healthy and Joe Musgrove on track, this team is still capable of contending.

22. Toronto Blue Jays (14-15)

Previous Rank: 12

Last Week: 1-3 @ KC, 1-2 vs. LAD

The biggest takeaway for the Blue Jays last week was Kevin Gausman seemingly turning a corner after his rocky start to the year, as he turned in quality starts on Tuesday (6.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 0 ER) and Sunday (7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER). They still need to find more consistency at the back of the rotation, but the bigger issue now is a lackluster offense that is averaging 3.55 runs per game and hitting .226 with a .669 OPS.

Nos. 21-19

Slade Cecconi Steph Chambers/Getty Images

21. Pittsburgh Pirates (14-15)

Previous Rank: 17

Last Week: 2-2 vs. MIL, 1-2 @ SF

The Pirates have gone just 3-10 since their 11-5 start to the year, but on a positive note, it's becoming clearer with every start that rookie right-hander Jared Jones is a dude.

The 22-year-old took the loss on Sunday, but he has a 3.18 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and a 42-to-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 34 innings.

20. Washington Nationals (13-14)

Previous Rank: 21

Last Week: 0-3 vs. LAD, 3-0 @ MIA

The Nationals have played much better on the road (9-6) than they have at home (4-8), and that trend continued last week. Rookie Mitchell Parker has been a nice surprise, going 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 14 strikeouts in 16 innings over his first three starts in the majors. The left-hander began the season as the No. 29 prospect in the Nationals farm system.

19. Arizona Diamondbacks (13-16)

Previous Rank: 16

Last Week: 1-2 @ STL, 1-2 @ SEA

With Merrill Kelly (shoulder strain) and Ryne Nelson (elbow contusion) both on the injured list and Eduardo Rodríguez (lat strain) still ramping up for the season, the D-backs have seen their starting pitching depth put to the test early. Rookie Slade Cecconi has turned in back-to-back quality starts since joining the rotation on April 21, including six innings of three-hit, one-run ball against the Mariners on Saturday.

Nos. 18-16

J.D. Martinez Jim McIsaac/Getty Images

18. New York Mets (14-13)

Previous Rank: 9

Last Week: 1-2 @ SF, 1-2 vs. STL

The Mets used a six-game winning streak to climb into the top 10 of last week's rankings, but they have stumbled to a 2-5 record in their last seven games. Losing catcher Francisco Alvarez for the next six-to-eight weeks while he recovers from thumb surgery is a major blow offensively, but they finally welcomed J.D. Martinez to the active roster on Friday.

17. St. Louis Cardinals (13-15)

Previous Rank: 23

Last Week: 2-1 vs. ARI, 2-1 @ NYM

After missing the first week of the season, Sonny Gray is quickly shaping up to be one of the best signings of the offseason. The veteran right-hander sports a 1.16 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 23.1 innings after recording his third straight quality start on Saturday. Offensively, the Cardinals continue to search for answers as struggling former top prospect Jordan Walker was optioned to Triple-A on Wednesday.

16. San Francisco Giants (14-15)

Previous Rank: 22

Last Week: 2-1 vs. NYM, 2-1 vs. PIT

The Giants lost free-agent signing Blake Snell to a left adductor strain, but newcomer Jordan Hicks and rookies Kyle Harrison and Keaton Winn have done a terrific job in support of ace Logan Webb, and they rank ninth in the majors with a 3.67 ERA from the starting staff. Even with an improved offense, the pitching staff will be the key to their success going forward.

Nos. 15-13

Elly De La Cruz Dylan Buell/Getty Images

15. Cincinnati Reds (15-13)

Previous Rank: 15

Last Week: 2-2 vs. PHI, 1-2 @ TEX

The Reds rank 16th in the majors with a 4.00 ERA from the starting rotation, which might not jump off the page but does stand as a vast improvement over the 5.43 ERA that ranked 28th in the majors a year ago. Rising star Elly De La Cruz has nearly doubled his walk rate from 8.2 to 14.9 percent, and the result is a .395 on-base percentage and a far more well-rounded offensive game.

14. Minnesota Twins (14-13)

Previous Rank: 25

Last Week: 4-0 vs. CWS, 3-0 @ LAA

After a 6-12 start to the year that included a five-game losing streak, the Twins are on the upswing, though their 7-0 showing last week came against two of the worst teams in the league. The offense piled up 57 runs in seven games, with Willi Castro (13-for-31, 5 2B, HR), Ryan Jeffers (11-for-25, 2 2B, 2 HR) and Edouard Julien (9-for-22, 3 2B, 3 HR) leading the way.

13. Texas Rangers (15-14)

Previous Rank: 13

Last Week: 1-2 vs. SEA, 2-1 vs. CIN

The Rangers continue to do a solid job treading water while they wait on their starting rotation to get fully healthy. Veteran closer Kirby Yates has been one of the best pickups of the offseason, converting all five of his save opportunities while tossing 12 scoreless innings and posting a 0.50 WHIP in 11 appearances pitching on a one-year, $4.5 million deal.

Nos. 12-10

Tarik Skubal Nic Antaya/Getty Images

12. Kansas City Royals (17-12)

Previous Rank: 7

Last Week: 3-1 vs. TOR, 1-2 @ DET

The Royals rank third in the majors with a 2.98 ERA from the starting rotation, but they will be without Alec Marsh (5 GS, 2.70 ERA, 1.01 WHIP) after he took a line drive off his pitching elbow Wednesday. Offensively, someone needs to step up to prove some support to Salvador Perez (.990 OPS, 7 HR, 26 RBI) and Bobby Witt Jr. (.896 OPS, 16 XBH, 8 SB) in the lineup.

11. Detroit Tigers (16-12)

Previous Rank: 14

Last Week: 2-1 @ TB, 2-1 vs. KC

The Tigers have logged three straight series wins, improving to 10-4 with a plus-20 run differential on the road in the process. Left-hander Tarik Skubal is having a Cy Young-caliber season, going 4-0 with a 1.72 ERA, 0.74 WHIP and 41 strikeouts in 36.2 innings. Meanwhile, Spencer Torkelson is still looking for his first home run of the season after hitting 31 long balls a year ago, and he was out of the starting lineup on Tuesday and Sunday.

10. Boston Red Sox (16-13)

Previous Rank: 11

Last Week: 1-2 @ CLE, 2-1 vs. CHC

The Red Sox walked off against the Cubs on Sunday Night Baseball and got another strong start from breakout star Tanner Houck, who now has a 1.60 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 41-to-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 33.1 innings. With first baseman Triston Casas expected to miss significant time with a fractured rib, veteran Garrett Cooper was acquired in a trade with the Cubs over the weekend.

Nos. 9-7

Brice Turang Dylan Buell/Getty Images

9. Seattle Mariners (15-13)

Previous Rank: 20

Last Week: 2-1 @ TEX, 2-1 vs. ARI

With an 11-5 record in their last 16 games, the Mariners are one of baseball's hottest teams, and their pitching staff has allowed three or fewer runs in all but two games during that stretch. Right-hander George Kirby tossed seven scoreless innings of two-hit ball against the D-backs on Saturday, striking out 12 along the way.

8. Chicago Cubs (17-11)

Previous Rank: 10

Last Week: 3-0 vs. HOU, 1-2 @ BOS

The Cubs are now without Justin Steele, Kyle Hendricks, Jordan Wicks and Drew Smyly as options in the starting rotation, and they also lost Cody Bellinger to fractured ribs early last week, but they are still off to their best start since the 2016 season. Pete Crow-Armstrong and Mike Tauchman will need to step up offensively in the outfield.

7. Milwaukee Brewers (17-10)

Previous Rank: 5

Last Week: 2-2 @ PIT, 1-2 vs. NYY

The Brewers are 12-4 away from American Family Field this season, and a big three-game series with the Cubs awaits this weekend at Wrigley Field. Second baseman Brice Turang is enjoying a breakout season at the plate, hitting .310/.371/.437 with seven extra-base hits and 13 steals in 25 games. Meanwhile, the bullpen has recorded 12 wins and converted 10 of 14 save opportunities even with All-Star closer Devin Williams on the sidelines.

Nos. 6-4

Andy Pages Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images

6. Baltimore Orioles (17-10)

Previous Rank: 3

Last Week: 2-1 @ LAA, 1-2 vs. OAK

The Orioles optioned top prospect Jackson Holliday back to Triple-A on Friday, but the offense has still been one of the best in baseball thanks to breakout seasons from Colton Cowser and Jordan Westburg alongside an already stacked lineup. The performance of Cole Irvin (5 GS, 3.49 ERA, 28.1 IP) and Albert Suárez (3 GS, 2.35 ERA, 15.1 IP) in the starting rotation has helped bridge the gap until John Means and Kyle Bradish return to action.

5. Philadelphia Phillies (19-10)

Previous Rank: 8

Last Week: 2-2 @ CIN, 3-0 @ SD

The Phillies had a seven-game winning streak earlier in April, and they have gone 11-2 in their last 13 games to steadily climb into the upper echelon of teams. The starting rotation has been one of the best in baseball, with a 2.36 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 184 strikeouts in 175.1 innings while limiting opposing hitters to a MLB-low .189 batting average.

4. Los Angeles Dodgers (18-12)

Previous Rank: 6

Last Week: 3-0 @ WAS, 2-1 @ TOR

After series wins over the Nationals and Blue Jays on the road, the Dodgers are again a top-five team, though they continue to piece things together in the starting rotation with James Paxton, Gavin Stone and Landon Knack currently penciled in behind Tyler Glasnow and Yoshinobu Yamamoto on the staff. Rookie Andy Pages has given the offense a nice boost in right field.

Nos. 3-1

Anthony Rizzo Stacy Revere/Getty Images

3. Cleveland Guardians (19-9)

Previous Rank: 4

Last Week: 2-1 vs. BOS, 1-2 @ ATL

The Guardians rank sixth in the majors with a 3.22 ERA and are averaging 5.12 runs per game offensively, emerging as the cream of the crop in an upstart AL Central race. Steven Kwan and Josh Naylor have provided some welcome support to José Ramírez in the lineup, while Ben Lively and Hunter Gaddis have been unexpected contributors to the pitching staff.

2. New York Yankees (19-10)

Previous Rank: 2

Last Week: 2-2 vs. OAK, 2-1 @ MIL

The Yankees have not had a losing streak of more than two games yet this season, and they have just one outright series loss. Left-hander Carlos Rodón allowed just three hits and one earned run in 13 innings over his two starts last week, and with Gerrit Cole sidelined he is a huge X-factor on the roster. Offensively, Anthony Rizzo (11-for-27, 2 2B, 4 HR, 7 RBI) snapped out of his early funk with a huge week at the dish.

1. Atlanta Braves (19-7)

Previous Rank: 1

Last Week: 3-0 vs. MIA, 2-1 vs. CLE

With a 12-3 record over their last 15 games and a plus-47 run differential that leads the majors, the Braves remain baseball's No. 1 team. The new-look starting rotation ranks 10th in the majors with a 3.72 ERA thanks to strong starts from Reynaldo López (4 GS, 0.72 ERA, 25.0 IP) and Chris Sale (5 GS, 3.69 ERA, 31.2 IP), and they will be tasked with helping to ease the loss of Spencer Strider.

Stars of the Week

Alec Bohm Dylan Buell/Getty Images

Hitter of the Week: Alec Bohm, Philadelphia Phillies

Stats: 7 G, 17-for-30, 8 2B, HR, 8 RBI, 6 R

After posting a 109 OPS+ with 31 doubles, 20 home runs and 97 RBI in 145 games, Alec Bohm has taken his game to another level in 2024 with one of the hottest starts of any hitter in baseball. Following his strong showing last week, he is now hitting .365/.441/.615 with 12 doubles, four home runs and 26 RBI in 29 games.

Pitcher of the Week: Max Fried, Atlanta Braves

Stats: 1 GS, W, SHO, 9.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 K

Max Fried got off to a rocky start in a contract year, posting a 7.71 ERA in 16.1 innings over his first four starts, but he looked the part of an ace on Tuesday with a three-hit shutout against the Miami Marlins. It was his fourth career shutout in 127 starts and could be the turning point in his season.

Rookie of the Week: Andy Pages, Los Angeles Dodgers

Stats: 6 G, 9-for-25, 2 2B, HR, 2 RBI, 5 R

Pages had a 31-homer season in 2021 and 26-homer season in 2022 while rising the ranks in the Dodgers farm system, and after an injury-plagued campaign last year he is getting his first shot in the majors. The 23-year-old hit .371/.452/.694 with five home runs and 15 RBI in 15 games at Triple-A before he was promoted, and he has taken over an everyday role in the Dodgers outfield.
