Xavier Worthy Thrills Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs Fans After Shock Bills Trade in Draft

Julia Stumbaugh

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes seems excited to throw passes to speedy wide receiver Xavier Worthy next season.

Mahomes celebrated on X after the Chiefs traded up with the Buffalo Bills in order to select Worthy with the No. 28 pick of the 2024 NFL Draft Thursday night.

Chiefs defensive end Charles Omenihu also reacted to the pick:

Worthy set an NFL Combine record in March by running the 40-yard dash in 4.21 seconds.

He also passed for more than 1,000 yards during his third season with Texas in 2023.

Worthy, who ranks third in Longhorns history with 26 career touchdowns, will now compete to be a top target for Mahomes next season.

Worthy will now join a receiver group also bolstered by the offseason signing of Marquise Brown, another receiver known for his speed.

The Chiefs were looking for receiver depth after benching Kadarius Toney at the tail end of their run to the Super Bowl in 2023.

Kansas City fans are now hoping their team has now found it.

The trade up led some to wonder why the Bills passed on their own opportunity to draft Worthy. Buffalo ended up trading down a second time and out of the first round entirely.

It was also the Bills who traded with the Chiefs in the first round of the 2017 draft, which ended up being the most consequential pick in Kansas City after they moved up to No. 10 and drafted Mahomes.

The Chiefs traded down in the third and seventh round in order to snag the pick from the Bills.

That sacrifice will end up being well worth it if Worthy can make the defending champions even more dangerous by becoming a true WR1 for Mahomes.
