NFL Draft 2024 Sets Record with 6 QBs in Round 1 After Penix Jr., McCarthy, Nix Picks

Julia Stumbaugh

The Denver Broncos made history by choosing former Oregon quarterback Bo Nix with the No. 12 pick of the 2024 NFL draft.

Nix was the sixth quarterback selected Thursday night, marking the most quarterbacks ever selected within the first 12 picks, per ESPN Stats & Info and ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Schefter noted that the top 12 picks of 2024 produced the same number of signal-callers drafted in Round 1 of 1983, formerly the most quarterback-heavy first round in draft history.

Three quarterbacks from the 1983 class became Hall of Famers. The six teams betting high on signal-callers Thursday will now hope for a similar result in 2024.

The quarterbacks weren't the only unusual part of the first round.

The first 14 teams drafting picked only offensive players, leaving the Indianapolis Colts to make the first defensive pick of 2024 with UCLA defensive end Laiatu Latu at No. 15.

That marked the first time in NFL draft history that no defensive players have been selected within the top 10 picks, per Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.

The previous record was seven straight offensive players in 2021, when the Carolina Panthers drafted cornerback Jaycee Horn at No. 8, Schefter reported.

No. 1 pick Caleb Williams and No. 10 pick J.J. McCarthy additionally helped USC and Michigan break even more NFL draft records with their first-round selections.

Things played out as expected at the top of the draft Thursday night. The quarterback-needy Chicago Bears, Washington Commanders and New England Patriots each drafted players who will get a shot to play as the team's next franchise quarterback.

The Falcons were the first team to make an unexpected pick by selecting Michael Penix Jr. at No. 8. Atlanta's move came just over one month after the Falcons signed veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins to a four-year deal.

The Vikings then traded up to select McCarthy at 10th before the Broncos grabbed Nix at No. 12.

The next quarterback off the board could be South Carolina's Spencer Rattler, although he will be expected to wait for a later round to hear his name called.
