2024 NFL Draft: 5 Teams in Best Position to Make Major Splashes in Round 1

Brad Gagnon

Look beyond the quarterbacks.

In fact, with one obvious exception, those lined up to take a signal-caller and/or those in need of QBs in the first round of this week's NFL draft aren't positioned to make major splashes elsewhere.

They're going all-in, and we won't know if the gamble will have paid off for several years. In most cases, they will be forced to neglect the remainder of the roster early in the draft in order to take that quarterback shot.

With that in mind, let's look at five teams that either already have their QB situations ironed out and are likely to have plenty of great options in order to get splashy in Round 1, or are well-positioned to land a good signal-caller while still having first-round juice to squeeze.

Caleb Williams (presumably) selected first overall plus a top-10 pick? That's a haul, with the Chicago Bears potentially positioned to land the top offensive player and top defensive player in this class.

Who cares that they only have two other selections for the remainder of the draft?

Of course, in the case of a shocking turn of events, the Bears could also command a king's ransom for the top selection and load up on additional draft capital and still easily end up with Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, J.J. McCarthy or Bo Nix.

It's the ultimate draft luxury.

Arizona Cardinals

Say what you will about Kyler Murray, but he's a high-paid two-time Pro Bowler who has years to become special at age 26.

It's no surprise the Cardinals are riding it out with the Oklahoma product at least another year or two, which positions them as the king of the non-quarterback hill in most mock drafts in 2024.

With quarterbacks widely expected to go off the board in the opening three selections, the Cards will almost certainly be able to land the best player on their draft board in the No. 4 spot.

And in this case, that's likely to be potential generational wide receiver talent Marvin Harrison Jr., who could immediately transform that Murray-led offense.

That alone makes Arizona a huge player in this draft, without even taking into account the fact that its pick could be highly sought by those in the QB sweepstakes.

Oh, and did we mention the Cardinals are also slated to be on the board in the 27th and 35th spots?

Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers aren't in quite as good a position as the Cardinals, but they do hold the No. 5 selection while already possessing a franchise quarterback in Justin Herbert.

That will give the new L.A. regime a chance to add an elite prospect at a position of need, or trade down and take advantage of a quarterback-needy team with a lower selection in the top half of Round 1.

At the very least, they're pretty much guaranteed to land one of the top three receivers in Harrison, Malik Nabers or Rome Odunze, which would immediately bolster the offense for Herbert and new head coach Jim Harbaugh.

Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons are in a less extreme position than the Bolts. They've got their quarterback in Kirk Cousins, and they should have a chance at one of the highest-ranked players on their draft board with the No. 8 overall selection.

That remains an attractive potential trade-up spot for a team such as Minnesota, Denver or Las Vegas in the quarterback sweepstakes, but the Falcons would be just fine standing pat and taking a defensive standout that suits their needs.

Four potential top-eight prospects come to mind: Edge defenders Dallas Turner and Jared Verse, and cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Terrion Arnold.

There aren't many worst-case scenarios here.

Minnesota Vikings

This draft class contains six particular potential franchise quarterbacks in Williams, Daniels, Maye, McCarthy, Nix and Michael Penix Jr.

Six signal-callers have never gone off the board in the top 10, so there's a good chance the Minnesota Vikings will have a shot at at least one of those names in the No. 11 spot.

That alone doesn't make them any sort of draft king, but they do also own the No. 23 overall selection.

So, they could either leverage that pick to move up or down the board for the right guy, or they could land him from where they are and wind up with another elite player within about 90 minutes.

Either way, the Vikings have a chance to completely reset the franchise on Thursday night.
