Marvin Harrison Jr. Called Out by NFL Coach for Not Running 40: 'Competitors Compete'

Timothy Rapp

Marvin Harrison Jr. has long been considered one of the top young receivers in football, and he very well may be the first non-quarterback selected at this year's NFL draft.

But he also chose to bypass workouts at the NFL Scouting Combine and didn't run the 40-yard dash at all ahead of the draft, decisions that raised some eyebrows in league circles.

"Why not run?" a coach said to The Athletic's Jeff Howe. "Competitors compete."

"So much unknown with the way he handled the process," an executive added.

Harrison certainly put enough on tape to be a top-five pick, registering 155 catches for 2,613 yards and 31 touchdowns in three college seasons. He had over 1,400 yards and exactly 14 scores in each of the past two campaigns.

He's the top-ranked player in the latest big board from the B/R NFL Scouting Department, earning an impressive 9.7 grade, and was judged in those rankings to have the best hands, be the best route-runner and be the most NFL-ready of any receiver in this draft class.

So at this point, most of the critiques of him feel fairly nit-picky. It would be a stunner if he wasn't a top-10 pick.
