Warriors' Stephen Curry Wins 2023-24 NBA Clutch Player of the Year over SGA, DeRozan

Stephen Curry delivered in crunch time throughout the 2023-24 season, and he was rewarded accordingly Thursday.

Curry was named the NBA's 2023-24 Clutch Player of the Year, defeating fellow finalists DeMar DeRozan of the Chicago Bulls and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Curry narrowly edged DeRozan in the final voting:

Curry, DeRozan and Gilgeous-Alexander were named the finalists on Sunday on TNT's NBA Tip-Off during the opening weekend of the NBA playoffs, which was notable timing since only Gilgeous-Alexander was clutch enough to make the playoffs from the trio.

He led the Oklahoma City Thunder to the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference at 57-25 by averaging 30.1 points, 6.2 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game while shooting 53.5 percent from the floor and 35.3 percent from deep.

It came as no surprise that OKC consistently looked his way in clutch situations, and he responded.

Gilgeous-Alexander was seventh in the league in total points scored in the clutch, which the NBA defines as during the final five minutes of a game when the margin is five points or fewer. He scored 112 points on 58.1 percent shooting from the field in the clutch despite playing just 107.5 total clutch minutes, per NBA.com.

For comparison, the top six clutch-time scorers all played at least 121.7 minutes with five of them playing at least 137.8 minutes.

Yet Gilgeous-Alexander was right near the top of the leaderboard.

It was Curry who sat atop the leaderboard with 189 points on 49.6 percent shooting from the field and 45.7 percent shooting from deep in 142.9 clutch minutes. He was closely followed by DeRozan, who sat in second with 182 points on 48.7 percent shooting from the field and 46.7 percent shooting from deep in 191.8 clutch minutes.

The Warriors went 23-20 in the 43 clutch games Steph played in, while the Bulls went 24-16 in DeRozan's clutch games. That Chicago had such an impressive record in the clutch despite an overall mark of 39-43 is a testament to DeRozan's ability to take over in the final minutes when he sensed a game was winnable.

As for the Thunder, they were better than both the Warriors and Bulls at 23-11 when SGA played.

That helped them finish 57-25 and seize the No. 1 seed in a loaded Western Conference.

All three finalists propelled their teams to far better records because of their ability to deliver in crunch time, but it was Curry who took home the award.
