WWE Rumors: Jinder Mahal, Xia Li Among Stars Released from Contracts Before WWE Draft

WWE reportedly released multiple Superstars from its roster during and after SmackDown on Friday night, including former WWE champion Jinder Mahal.

According to Fightful Select (h/t Ethan Renner of F4WOnline), WWE also parted ways with Xia Li, Xyon Quinn, Veer and Sanga.

Prior to reports of his release, Mahal posted on X that he had "quit," and changed his bio to read "Free Agent - 90 Days," in reference to the 90-day non-compete clause WWE Superstars normally have to satisfy following their release:

Mahal, 37, is best known for his shocking WWE Championship win over Randy Orton in 2017 and his subsequent 169-day title reign. He also won the United States Championship at WrestleMania 34.

The first WWE champion of Indian descent was little-used in more recent years, although he did experience a brief resurgence in January when he took part in a promo segment with The Rock and had a World Heavyweight Championship match against Seth Rollins.

However, Mahal's primarily role for the past several months was the manager and mouthpiece of Indus Sher, comprised of Veer and Sanga.

The team started in NXT and later made sporadic appearances on the main roster, but they never gained much traction.

Veer's primary claim to fame is that he was one of two winners of the Million Dollar Arm competition in India, which was dramatized in a Disney movie. Winning the competition resulted in him signing a contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates and spending some time in their minor league system as a pitcher.

Li, 35, became the first Chinese woman in WWE history to compete in a match when she was part of the Mae Young Classic in 2017.

Over the next several years, she underwent several character transformations, wrestling in NXT from 2019 to 2021 before getting called up to SmackDown as part of the 2021 WWE draft.

Li was primarily used as a lower-card talent, although she did unsuccessfully challenge Lyra Valkyria for the NXT Women's Championship in November, while simultaneously having a brief feud with Becky Lynch that ended when Lynch beat her on the Nov. 20 episode of Raw.

On Friday night, Li posted a farewell message on X, thanking WWE and its head of creative Triple H:

Quinn, who played professional rugby in his home country of Australia before signing with WWE in 2018, was primarily part of the NXT roster during his time with the company.

He was used quite a bit in 2021 and 2022 in NXT before being included in the 2023 WWE draft. Quinn was not selected to a brand, and he was rarely seen on television thereafter.

His final televised appearance came in March when he lost a squash match to Bron Breakker in mere seconds on SmackDown.

Friday marked the first significant round of talent releases in WWE since longtime chairman and CEO Vince McMahon stepped down from his role with TKO Group Holdings in January after a sexual assault lawsuit was filed against him by a former employee.

Mass releases were a normal occurrence under McMahon, and while it is unclear what the frequency will be like with Triple H and WWE president Nick Khan running the show, there is reportedly already a different tone.

Per PWInsider.com's Mike Johnson, the calls placed to the released talent were far more "apologetic and respectful" than they had been in the past.
