MLB Rumors: Yankees Would 'Consider' Pete Alonso Contract If Juan Soto Joined Mets

Paul Kasabian

New York Yankees outfielder Juan Soto and New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso are both impending free agents.

It's obviously unclear where they'll be going with the 2024 season not even a month old, but Jon Heyman of the New York Post brought up the possibility of the two players swapping teams in the winter.

"Is it possible slugging superstars Pete Alonso of the Mets and Juan Soto of the Yankees trade places this winter?

"While the most probable scenario has one or both star free agents staying put, the possibility of the mega-stars swapping teams shouldn't be considered completely fanciful.

"We've long heard the Mets may well go for Soto, especially if things don't come together quickly with Alonso. And if the Mets do sign Soto, Alonso becomes the logical fallback option for the Yankees, especially since even team owner Steve Cohen probably won't sign both in his 110 percent tax situation. And under those circumstances, word is the Yankees would seriously consider Alonso."

The 25-year-old Soto is playing himself into a massive contract thus far, hitting .352 (1.055 OPS) with four home runs and 17 RBI. He's been the catalyst for the Yankees' 13-6 start, good enough for first in the AL East.

The 29-year-old Alonso is enjoying a nice contract year, smacking six home runs through 18 games to go along with a .905 OPS for the 10-8 Mets. He's well on pace to hit 40 or more home runs for the third straight year.

The Yankees, of course, will present tough competition for the Mets or whomever else wants to sign Soto. It's early, but Soto is looking like an early American League MVP frontrunner. Not only that, but the Yankees, who finished just 82-80 last year, are looking like an AL powerhouse this year too. Soto is a big reason for that turnaround, so this Heyman report is no surprise.

"...The Yankees will make Soto their 'top priority,' according to sources—no surprise since they loved him in winter and likely love him even more now that he has transformed their lineup," Heyman wrote.

The Mets' interest in Soto is no secret. Of note, ESPN's Buster Olney reported in March that the Mets "fully intend to take a run" on Soto next winter. Mets owner Steve Cohen has the deep pockets to get such a deal done, and it also helps that nearly $56 million in Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander's deferred salaries will go off the books in 2025 too.

So we'll see where Soto ends up soon enough. As for Alonso, the Yankees could certainly be a fallback option, although Heyman noted that the San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners, Houston Astros and Texas Rangers are potential landing spots for him as well. Given his status as one of the league's premier power hitters, that isn't a surprise, and he'll be highly coveted as well.
