WWE Rumors on The Rock's Next Match, Drew McIntyre's Contract and WrestleMania in May

Bleacher Report catches you up on the latest news from the WWE Universe.

The Rock Reportedly Could Wrestle Again This Year

The Rock suggested this week that he may not return to the ring until next year at WrestleMania 41, but there is reportedly still a chance that he could wrestle before then.

In a video posted this week on Instagram, The Rock noted that he feels great after competing in his first true match in 11 years at WrestleMania 40, and he added that his "sights are set" on next year's WrestleMania.

According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Subhojeet Mukherjee of Ringside News), there is talk of The Rock facing Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 41, however, there is a "chance" of him wrestling again before 2023 is over.

Regardless of when The Rock's next match is, Meltzer noted that Rock vs. Rhodes is "tentatively" scheduled for WrestleMania 41.

During an appearance this week on Good Morning Britain (h/t Liam Winnard of WrestleTalk.com), Rhodes expressed his belief that a singles match against The Rock is going to happen at some point, saying:

"I wanna say yes. I wanna say yes. I think it'll really come down to, can I be a good champion, or a great champion. Roman Reigns was a great champion.

"And will that be enough to entice The Rock? Because that's what's happened here. Rock will tell you he made wrestling cool again. Rock made wrestling cool maybe in the first place, but this run it's a whole new generation, a whole new locker room—Seth Rollins, Becky Lynch, myself, Rhea Ripley, all these people. I think the more we keep this, the better we do, the more chances it lures Rock back in the fray."

At WrestleMania 40, The Rock teamed up with Roman Reigns in a winning effort against Rhodes and Seth Rollins in the main event of Night 1, however, Rhodes beat Reigns in the main event of Night 2 to become the new undisputed WWE champion.

The next night on Raw, The Rock confronted Rhodes and said that while he has to ride off into the sunset for now, he is going to be gunning for The American Nightmare when he returns.

Of course, The Rock vs. Rhodes is a distinct possibility for WrestleMania 41 given that they are two of the biggest stars in wrestling, but it is fair to wonder where Reigns would fit in as part of that scenario.

McIntyre Reportedly Expected to Re-Sign with WWE

Amid months of speculation regarding the expiration of Drew McIntyre's WWE contract, there is reportedly no indication that he intends on leaving the company.

According to Meltzer (h/t WrestlePurists), people in WWE expect McIntyre to re-sign and believe it is a "given" since he is being advertised for shows taking place after his contract is supposed to expire.

Meltzer added that while there had previously been talk that McIntyre could take time off before making his contract decision if he wasn't "creatively fulfilled," it is now believed that he is happy with how he is being utilized.

Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp reported Friday that McIntyre's contract is up in late May, and he still hasn't officially signed a new deal with WWE.

Even if McIntyre has yet to re-sign, so many factors in recent months have pointed to the likely scenario that he is going to stay in WWE.

McIntyre was booked as only the second person to beat Rhodes in a singles match since Cody's return to the company, and he then faced Rollins in a World Heavyweight Championship match at WrestleMania 40.

The Scottish Warrior won the title, only for CM Punk to attack him and Damian Priest to successfully cash in his Money in the Bank contract on him.

WWE is clearly building to a future match between McIntyre and Punk, but Punk is out with a torn triceps and likely won't be back until the summer.

That suggests McIntyre re-signing with WWE is a foregone conclusion, although he apparently hasn't officially signed on the dotted line yet.

WWE Reportedly Discussing Possibility of Moving WrestleMania to May

WrestleMania has traditionally always been held in March or April, but WWE is reportedly discussing a significant change in that regard.

According to Fightful Select (h/t Steve Carrier of Ringside News), WWE president Nick Khan made it clear this week that he does not want WrestleMania to go head-to-head with the Final Four again in the future, which is what happened with WrestleMania 40.

As a result, there have been talks about WWE going back to holding WrestleMania in March, which is something it did many times in the past. However, another option being discussed is having WrestleMania take place in May for the first time ever.

Additionally, WWE has yet to announce where WrestleMania 41 will be held. The Minnesota Vikings' U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis has long been considered the front-runner, but some in WWE are pushing for the show to occur in Las Vegas at the Las Vegas Raiders' Allegiant Stadium, per Fightful.

Khan said WWE wants to get away from holding WrestleMania in cold-weather cities at outdoor venues on the heels of WrestleMania 40 emanating from the Philadelphia Eagles' Lincoln Financial Field in Philly.

Moving WrestleMania to May would perhaps make weather less of a factor and allow for northeastern cities to host it in the future.

Although it would open up more options for WWE, there may be some pushback from traditionalists since WrestleMania is a staple in late March or early April.

Whatever WWE decides, the company is currently on a hot streak, and it is likely that fans will tune in in droves regardless of when WrestleMania takes place.
