WWE's Big Issue, What's Next for Jack Perry After AEW Dynasty and More Quick Takes

Despite a wildly successful WrestleMania season, there are still several issues WWE has to fix on SmackDown and Raw in the 2024 draft, primarily in the red brand's women's division.

Rhea Ripley going down with an injury indefinitely leaves a massive gap at the top of the women's scene on Raw. Although a new women's world champion will be crowned on Monday, the division is in desperate need of a shakeup that the looming draft can provide.

Meanwhile, the inaugural installment of AEW Dynasty on Sunday may well go down as one of the company's strongest shows ever. The event had an abundance of excellent matches and memorable moments, including the long-awaited return of Jack Perry to AEW TV.

Straight out of the gate, he feels like a logical addition to The Elite and is one of the most despised wrestlers on the roster. Now the key is in the follow-up for All Elite Wrestling and ensuring he maintains the buzz he has coming out of the pay-per-view.

This installment of Quick Takes will tackle what's next for Perry, why the World Tag Team Championship should change hands on Monday's Raw, which AEW star can greatly benefit from an extended absence, and more.

Rhea Ripley Vacating Title Exposes Bigger Problem in Raw Women's Division

Rhea Ripley dominated the Raw women's ranks for over a year as women's world champion, though it can be argued that a majority of her reign wasn't all that memorable.

WWE's failure to build up genuine threats to the title throughout her 380-day run as champ is largely to blame. Now that she's had to vacate the prestigious prize due to injury, it's become painfully apparent that the options are limited for who could take the title and feel remotely as special.

The red brand boasts a wealth of talent, yet only a handful are actually over with the audience at the moment. Putting the belt on Liv Morgan or Nia Jax along with bringing in some stars from SmackDown via the draft are quick fixes to the problem, but this lingering issue is one that won't go away until more effort is put into establishing the newer names.

Candice LeRae's slow-burn heel turn is a solid start, but the rest of the Raw women's division suffer from having minimal character development. Brief matches aren't enough to get fans familiar with them, resulting in those Superstars disappearing from programming for weeks at a time and never being able to sustain momentum.

Naomi, Charlotte Flair, Damage CTRL and potentially an NXT talent could inject new life into the division, but using them to elevate others is equally important.

Heel Kris Statlander Is Imminent

Julia Hart holding her AEW TBS Championship until Double or Nothing for a match with Mercedes Moné would have been the safe route to take, but Willow Nightingale taking the title at Dynasty instead was the much more intriguing option.

From an in-ring standpoint, Nightingale vs. Moné will be a much better bout, not to mention the history they have from their first face-off in May 2023. However, the bigger takeaway from the title change at Dynasty was that Kris Statlander's heel turn is undoubtedly imminent.

Moné has yet to discover who attacked her backstage on the April 10 edition of Dynamite. Hart and Nightingale are meant to be the primary suspects, whereas Statlander had previously teasing tension with Nightingale for months and made much more sense as a suspect.

A heel Statlander could easily feud with Nightingale or Moné post-Double or Nothing or perhaps both simultaneously in a three-way chase for the championship. It will be a refreshing change of pace for her stagnant character and give the TBS title picture an instant credibility boost.

An Extended Absence from Chris Jericho in AEW Is Long Overdue

More evident than almost anything else that went down at Dynasty was that Chris Jericho is long overdue for an extended absence from AEW TV.

From helping put the promotion on the map as the inaugural AEW world champion five years ago to being one of the worst recurring characters on the show, the veteran's gradual fall from grace as an on-screen character has been stunning to see.

Jericho remains capable of greatness in certain circumstances but is far too overexposed to help anyone at this point. A program with Hook will hardly benefit the now-former FTW champion if no aspect of the storyline is compelling or entertaining.

His best bet would be to take several months off from AEW programming and attempt to return feeling fresh. His consistent television time since the start of AEW has done him no favors and done damage to anything he's involved in.

AEW has such a stacked roster right now that Jericho is completely replaceable in his role, and an extended absence for him would actually afford underutilized stars the opportunity to sink or swim in his spot.

Awesome Truth's World Tag Team Title Reign Should Be Short-Lived

One of WrestleMania 40's greatest strengths was that it marked the culmination of several storylines that have been building for many months.

Cody Rhodes "finishing his story" by seizing the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship was the top headline, but there were plenty of others who got their just due as well.

Awesome Truth finally giving The Judgment Day their comeuppance and capturing the World Tag Team Championship was among the many feel-good moments of the weekend.

Unlike Rhodes and others, it was more about the moment for The Miz and R-Truth than the actual reign. They work well together and are clearly crowd favorites, but they don't need the belts to stay popular and they aren't the right tandem to take the division to the next level.

That's where DIY come in.

Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa earned their opportunity with a win in a Triple Threat tag team match on the April 15 edition of Raw and will get their shot on Monday's show. With the episode emanating from their home state of Ohio, now is as ideal of a time as any for them to become champs.

If DIY fall short for a third time in three months, a move to SmackDown would be the only way they can be salvaged.

Jack Perry Joining The Elite Ensures His Momentum Stays Strong

Following AEW's polarizing decision to air the All In backstage "brawl" between CM Punk and Jack Perry, it seemed as if it was only inevitable before the latter made his way back to AEW.

The self-proclaimed "Scapegoat" has spent the last two months finding what works about his heel persona and what doesn't, making him more of a complete package in the process for when he was ready to return to television.

Helping The Young Bucks clinch the AEW World Tag Team Championship at Dynasty all but confirms he'll be aligned with The Elite going forward, if not joining the group all together. A spot in AEW's top heel faction puts him in a prime position to build off the buzz he's generated so far and continue working his way back up the card.

A feud with FTR, who were denied the tag titles by Perry on Sunday night, would be the likely next step, but finding him a partner he can share the spotlight with could be a tall task.

Either way, AEW has the opportunity to ride this wave to wherever it's bound to take them, or risk ruining it by having Perry resort to the same shtick he had previously.

Perry won't be world champion in the immediate future, but getting him back in the mix with his newfound heat from the crowd should make for a fun run in the months ahead.
