Shams: Caitlin Clark Got Pitch from Stephen Curry, Under Armour Before Nike Shoe Deal

Caitlin Clark's game has long been compared to Stephen Curry's, so it's only fitting that Under Armour used the two-time NBA MVP as part of its pitch to try signing the Indiana Fever rookie to a marketing deal.

On FanDuel TV's Run it Back, Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium said Curry was involved in Under Armour's pitch to Clark before she decided to join the Nike family.

Charania, Mike Vorkunov and Ben Pickman reported on Wednesday that Clark is closing in on an "eight-figure endorsement deal" with Nike that is expected to include her own signature shoe.

Clark's ability to make shots from anywhere on the court during her time at Iowa led to the Curry comparisons.

Curry has downplayed that talk by noting she does so many other things on the court than just make shots that the comparison "robs her of the rest of her game."

Clark holds multiple NCAA Division I scoring and shooting records. She broke Curry's record for most three-pointers made in a single season with her 163rd of the 2023-24 campaign in a win over Penn State on March 8.

The three-time Big Ten Player of the Year holds the all-time Division I scoring record in men's or women's basketball with 3,951 points.

Curry joined the Under Armour family in 2013 and has been arguably their signature athlete. He signed a new long-term deal with the company last year to expand their partnership that included him being named president of the Curry Brand.

The agreement also gave Curry $75 million in Under Armour shares that will vest in two installments in 2029 and 2023, as long as he remains with the company.

Clark would become the third current WNBA player with a signature shoe if her deal with Nike becomes official. New York Liberty stars Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu have shoe deals, also with Nike.

The Indiana Fever selected Clark with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA draft on Monday. Her first regular-season game as a professional will be against the Connecticut Sun on May 14.
