Report: 76ers' Joel Embiid Spoke of Desire to Play for France Before Picking Team USA

Two years before Joel Embiid committed to Team USA, the Philadelphia 76ers center told French President Emmanuel Macron that he wanted to play for France.

RMC Sport obtained a copy of a 2021 letter Embiid sent to Macron in which he committed to suiting up for France and not entertaining any other offers.

"After discussion with the French Basketball Federation, my choice has now been made. I wish to take steps to obtain French naturalization and thus be able to be selected with the Blues. I therefore do not wish to play for any other national team," Embiid wrote in the letter.

Embiid, who has never played on the international stage, wrote it would be an "immense honor" to represent France in the 2024 Summer Olympics, which are taking place in Paris.

A native of Cameroon, Embiid also holds citizenship in France and the United States. That gave him the unique opportunity to choose between the three nations when deciding how to proceed with his international career.

France and the United States were considered the two favorites to land Embiid, who said he chose the U.S. because his son was born in the country.

"I'm really proud and excited about this decision. It was not easy. I am blessed to call Cameroon, France, and the USA home," Embiid posted on social media in October.

"After talking to my family, I knew it had to be Team USA. I want to play with my brothers in the league. I want to play for my fans because they've been incredible since the day I came here. But most of all, I want to honor my son who was born in the US. I want my boy to know I played my first Olympics for him."

Team USA named Embiid to its 12-man roster earlier this week. The reigning NBA MVP is part of one of the most star-studded rosters in Olympic history. LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant all committed to one last Olympic run, and they'll be joined by Jayson Tatum, Anthony Davis, Kawhi Leonard, Devin Booker, Jrue Holiday, Anthony Edwards, Tyrese Haliburton and Bam Adebayo.

The U.S. will be overwhelming favorites to win gold for a fifth straight Summer Olympics. Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr will lead the team for his first Olympics as head coach.
