POSITIVES

— Excels on angle-drive and base blocks with good initial quicks out of his stance and into contact to establish first meaningful contact.

— Does a nice job playing long and reworking his body positioning on shed attempts to wall off defenders and secure rush lanes.

— Takes good tracks and angles on climbs while coming to balance on contact before delivering jolt and driving 'backers off their spot.

— Provides a physical presence when uncovered to deliver body shots on adjacent rushers.

— Proven versatility at both tackle spots, including rotating on the fly mid-game to account for injuries.

NEGATIVES

— Easily manipulated into drifting, oversetting and out of position on an island against rushers who know how to set up their moves with stutters, hesitations and tempo.

— Middling lateral quickness leads to tardy change of direction and redirect ability.

— Struggles to get to his spot and execute backside cut-offs.

OVERALL

Matt Goncalves is a two-year starter inside Pittsburgh's balanced (50-50 run-pass split), zone-based scheme that operates under center and gun with extensive multiple tight end formations. Goncalves had three starts at left tackle before suffering a season-ending toe injury against West Virginia. He has well-rounded thickness throughout his frame with a flat, unimpressive build, middling lateral quickness and solid play strength.

Goncalves is a functional run-blocker with good initial quickness out of his stance that he combines with accurate, strong hands to establish first meaningful contact on angle-drive and base blocks to widen and laterally displace his man. He reworks himself well on blocks to sustain, adjust and secure rush lanes off his back side and can intersect targets on climbs using proper tracks and angles. He struggles to get to his landmarks on backside cut-offs that leaves him behind his target and struggles adjusting to slants and gap exchanges across his face due to stepping under himself when having to suddenly redirect.

In pass protection, Goncalves has a crafty approach with light, active hands and enough girth and strength to grind down rushers once latched. He also has a physical, aggressive demeanor when uncovered to punish adjacent rushers.

However, Goncalves struggles staying inside-out against widely aligned rushers who know how to set up their moves with stutters, hesitations and tempo. He can also get caught on his heels against the long-arm and be tardy regaining his balance to deal with counters off it.

Overall, Goncalves is a competent blocker due to his snap timing, positional leverage as a run-blocker and solid play strength. But his mediocre quickness and agility will make it difficult for him to protect his edges consistently in the NFL, which suggests he'll likely be a swing backup at either tackle or guard with upside as a spot starter.
