J.J. McCarthy Rumors: Scouts Agree with Tiki Barber, Say QB Isn't a 1st-Round Pick

Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy remains a "very polarizing" prospect ahead of the 2024 NFL draft, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

Fowler reported Monday on Get Up there are three teams "who tell me that they would be surprised if J.J. McCarthy does not go in the top six." However, he cited some scouts "who say he's not even a first-round pick."

McCarthy threw for 5,710 yards and 48 touchdowns in his two seasons as Michigan's starter. His efficiency took a big step forward in 2023 as well as he completed 72.3 percent of his passes and finished with a 167.4 QB rating.

There are nonetheless concerns over his skill set and his ceiling at the next level.

Fowler referenced recent comments from former Giants running back, who said on WFAN that McCarthy doesn't look like a first-round quarterback or one warranting the kind of assets that would be required to trade up.

Still, the premium placed on the quarterback position and the hierarchy of the 2024 draft class make McCarthy a strong contender to land in the top 10 despite the fact he generates such wide opinions.

The 2023 national champion is the No. 33 overall prospect on Bleacher Report's big board. Oregon's Bo Nix is next QB on the list at No. 62. Missing out on McCarthy might mean reaching even more to ensure a general manager isn't shut out at quarterback.

That might be enough of a reason to make a big bet on the Wolverines star.
