The 4 Best Opponents for Max Holloway After UFC 300 Win

Tom Taylor

Everybody is talking about Max Holloway.

The former featherweight champ returned to action at Saturday's UFC 300, taking on Justin Gaethje in a lightweight contest, with the promotion's novelty "BMF" title on the line.

Despite being an underdog heading into the fight, Holloway dominated most of the action and scored a highlight-reel, one-punch knockout with just one second left in the fifth and final round.

It was the biggest moment on a card full of big moments, and one that fans will still be reminiscing about for years.

The win cemented Holloway's legacy as one of the most talented and entertaining fighters in MMA history, but it also sets him up to continue making history.

Ahead of UFC 300, he was already considered the No. 1 contender at featherweight, and after beating Gaethje on the main card, he's also one of the top contenders at lightweight.

As he told the media after his stunning win, he's got "options."

Here are four fights that make sense for the 32-year-old after his stunning victory over Gaethje.

Ilia Topuria

Ahead of UFC 300, Holloway was pretty clear that, no matter the outcome of his fight with Gaethje, he intended to head back to featherweight to challenge new champion Ilia Topuria.

Immediately after his win on Saturday, he reaffirmed his desire to do so, accusing "El Matador" of avoiding him.

However, Topuria has welcomed a fight with the man who once held his belt. The Georgian-Spaniard, who won the title with a knockout of Alexander Volkanovski in February, reacted to Holloway's big win in an interview with ESPN Deportes (h/t Christopher De Santiago of MMA Knockout).

"It's clear for me, my next fight is against Max Holloway," the 27-year-old said. "Congratulations and enjoy tonight, but after fighting me he will have to go back in the line."

Clearly, these two are ready and willing to fight each other, and as two of the flashier strikers in featherweight history, all signs point to a riveting fight whenever they meet in the cage.

It could easily headline the UFC's planned debut in Spain, or any other pay-per-view on the calendar.

Winner of Islam Makhachev vs. Dustin Poirier

Holloway clearly deserves a crack at the featherweight belt, but after his stunning knockout win over one of the top lightweight contenders in Gaethje, he is in prime position for a shot at that belt too.

He followed his post-fight callout of Topuria with a call for a fight with lightweight champion Islam Makhachev.

Unfortunately for Holloway, it has since been announced that the next title shot will go to long-time lightweight contender Dustin Poirier at UFC 302 on June 1.

Presuming Holloway needs some time to recover from his fight with Gaethje, a clash with the Makhachev-Poirier winner could easily materialize sometime in the third quarter of 2024.

If Makhachev still has the belt, Holloway gets a chance to shock the world against a champion who looks increasingly unbeatable. If Poirier wins, Holloway gets the chance to avenge two previous losses.

Either way, it's a big opportunity for the featherweight legend.

Arman Tsarukyan

As we've already covered, the next crack at lightweight champ Islam Makhachev will go to Dustin Poirier. However, the UFC's first choice for the next title shot was reportedly Arman Tsarukyan.

Tsarukyan was also in action at UFC 300, defeating ex-lightweight champ Charles Oliveira in a hard-fought split decision. It was the biggest win of his career and earned him a chance to challenge Makhachev. But after his war with the former champ, he wasn't ready to commit.

Unless he plans to wait for the Makhachev-Poirier winner, that means he will need to take another fight in the interim. There is no bigger bout for him than a meeting with Holloway.

With a title shot almost guaranteed at featherweight, Holloway may not be interested in this matchup, but if he decides he wants to stick around at lightweight and stay active, this is certainly an option.

Conor McGregor

Shortly after UFC 300, it was announced that Conor McGregor will finally return to the Octagon at UFC 303 on June 29, where he will take on Michael Chandler at welterweight.

Despite his long absence, the Irishman remains the biggest star in MMA. However, it's hard to imagine him winning a belt again, even if he gets by Chandler. Instead, he seems to have entered the phase of his career where he will be taking legacy fights—against the biggest possible names, with the most possible buzz.

With Khabib Nurmagomedov retired, Nate Diaz no longer on the UFC roster, and Dustin Poirier soundly ahead in their rivalry, Holloway is probably the most high-profile opponent out there for McGregor right now.

The pair also have some history, as Notorious defeated the American by decision in a featherweight fight in 2013, when they were both still new to the UFC.

A rematch between the two makes plenty of sense, and given their status as two of the best strikers in the history of the lower weight classes, there's no doubt it would be an incredible fight.
